Good stuff 5th Dentist... but one comment:

Russ: Did you ever play an Infocom game called the Lurking Horror? It was an AWESOME game - but you had to say it right. Half the time you told people about the awesome game you were playing, they'd wonder how The Lurking Whore was such a terrifying game.

Please consider this next time you tell us about your prize-winning Doghouse PC. Because you -really- sounded like you wanted to call it the Gay Maker.

Never played Lurking Horror (although I did play a lot of Infocom... Hello Sailor)

However I also do not own a Doghouse. That's Raef. I own a Falcon Northwest Fragbox.

Nothing wrong with the Doghouse systems, they are quite good, they just didn't have the small form factor back when I bough my Fragbox.

But I believe the phrase you were looking for was "Game Maker"... ;-)

Unless, of course, you've been watching Torchwood.

Hey guys

Have recently subscribed to your podcast (2 months ago) and enjoyed this episode very much. I am from Aus and we love our gaming.

The detailed review on Gutshot really perked my interest and I did some research and also talked to a friend of mine. I have been running Star Wars (Saga edition) for over two years with our group of 6-8 hardy adventurers and have become a bit stale lately and wanted to look at something from left field. DnD 4th ed we tried for a couple of games and..........nah. In our opinion they have ruined DnD.

So out of nowhere comes Gutshot. Never heard of it but the way you described it in your podcast, it really sat well with what I like in my gaming. Sadly no stores here in Aus stock the book so I went to the source in US but saw they dont accept PayPal from our region. Sent them an email and unfortunately no replies at all. That was a bit dissapointing that no one there would bother to reply.

Not perturbed we managed to buy three new copies of the rules through a shop in the US and also bought som minatures. In all probably $150, not bad considering costs of other games.

We had our first, dry run. last night. Just me and a friend of mine before we introduce it to the group. We are members of a local gaming club so had heaps of wild west buildings that have been gathering dust for years as no one used them. Covered the whole 6x4 table.

Must say the rules are very simple in application, yet still maintain a tactical edge and also level of uncertainty in the encounter. We played a simple bandits versus Sheriff and deputy game. No structured initiative is actually very good and using the counters to draw from a hat is a good introduction. Near the end it became very hairy as the bandits were trying to escape out of town and it came down to who would be drawn out first as the Sheriff was close to the last two surviving bandits and could have killed them if he had gone before the bandits. Lucky for me that didnt happen.

The book is a very easy read but I do get the feeling that they werent sure if they were making a wargaming minatures rules or a role playing rules game and kind of went between the two. There are cross over elements in the book that I see. If they are recommending having a GM than I would say its a role playing rule set rather than wargaming rule set. You can do without but it does help having an independent arbiter making decisions.

We are going to play out a few more scenarios and bring the rest of the group in and someone will hopefully GM, as I want to take a break and actually play a character now.

Overall very good rule set for the time period and setting it is designed for. Do you know if they will be releasing any new stuff?? Would like to see supplements that cover, for example, other weapons of the era. Gattling guns, modified rifles with scopes, other pistol models, etc would be good to have to spice up the game play.
