It looks like it also could take conventional magazines, so could you have one of the upper ones, then have a lower one just stuck in but not completely, so that if the upper one ran out you would just have to slap the lower one in and have another 20-30 rounds? Just asking, because, well zombies tend to gather in large groups and that's not a time to be bothered with reloading.

The casings extract down and out the original mag well so that's a no-go. I have a hollowed out mag that will catch brass.

That, sounds like a winner, especially somewhere like a shooting range or hunting area where they make you pick them up. By the way, how many rounds does that mag hold?

50 round magazines for the 5.7x28mm cartridge.

If the magazine goes on top of the weapon, what is the purpose of the magazine well? As in, the usual place where the magazine goes on any other ar 15?

The mag well is there for two reasons, the 5.7 upper is fitted to standard ar15 lowers, keeping it affordable, and the extraction is vertically down through the lowers mag well.

That's actually a pretty clever design.
