The other thing about Scientology and some other cults is they don't seem to be interested in making the world a better place, just in getting recruits and milking their bank accounts.
Dianetics/Scientology claims you become a better person by paying them a lot of money, taking a test they administer, and then they say you're better than before.

The similarities between this and the Moderation team on Dakka is a genuine cosmic coincidence.
There, that'll be $1,000.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Does anyone know if Scientology contributes to any independent charities (i.e., ones that don't push their views on psychology, etc.)?

To the Scientologist I'm sure they think their religion is as valid as Mormonism or denominations founded for the sake of divorcing.
The origins and practice of Scientology is imo not all that different from all sorts of stuff people worship from Jedi to whatever Rasta's hail. Believe me I despise Scientology and think its nuts but I think the same about most including Christianity:
The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...
What I do like is the freedom of religion and to practice thereof which imo is what France has wrong here with Scientology. Quick-rich schemes and the like have long been associated with Christianity especially those 'healing' ceremonies and TV preachers that capitalize on 'em.

Difference between a Cult and Religion? We have proper documentary evidence about Cults, allowing us to judge them accurately as a bunch of lunatics only after sex/money/power/all three.
Religions however, are just a lot older, with no real paper trail other than a book held to be the truth because the book said it was the truth.

Same gak...
Have you read the rest of this thread after your little spasm? I'll let it slide because you appeased me with Slayer.
ADDITIONAL NOTE BY MOD FRAZZLED: OMG for once I didn't lock the religion thread...by the pricking of my thumbs something wicked this way comes!
