I added estended barrels to my bolters with handheld auspex. I also use bitz of sprues or if available, the snouts of plasma pistols, to make stocks.

the first SAW i made was using an old Scout bikers bolter, the one that had the foregrip, i made it for a friend and since then never been able to get hold of another one no matter how hard i tried as they are discontinued now :( though i have thought of making one using a similiar idea to yours and after reading your post i might have to now!!

http://www.pig-iron-productions.com/index.php?main_page=popup_image&pID=32 How about these as a basis, you could easily GS up some more bulk to them. They are scaled nicely to the IG models as well. Also check out the heads for when you come to convert your elite troops.

I'd advise going with Moose cavalry, Maybe some little beavers for fluff, and make sure you can GS a maple leaf pretty good. White/Red color scheme and you're golden!!!
Oh wait you said Cadians...I thought ummm....nevermind.
