I think that's a bit excessive, but it does somewhat depend on the grade of neodymium used. The range is generally N38-N42 and N48-N52, but I have seen low 30's and under.

For Terminators or similar I might go for 1/8, but as I use N52 grade I generally find 1/16 is strong enough.

I've been working to finalize the kits for the Assault Squad and I can pick up a model by a magnetized arm okay and they're just using 1/16". I''l try to get a video of that posted later.
