Simply put, the strategy.

I find the fluff more inane that some of the craziest comic books, and I never enjoyed painting anything really. In fact, I have yet to paint my first model outside of a base coat. I'm not going to ruin the models I have by slapping some garbage on there, but it will take a miracle to make me actually want to paint them.

So it all boils down to the strategy. It is like chess, but much more variety and better looks.

Heh, I bought my original Skaven army by selling something like 3 cards.

The Eldar took a few more

40K is the only wargame that allows the use of tanks on the scale that I enjoy building and painting.

If any other wargame came out with the same scale mechanized models, I'd drop 40K as a game in a heartbeat. I'd still collect any cool tanks that came around, but I sure wouldn't be collecting any armies.

I must say that it is mainly for the painting. Even though I am not exeptional at it there is just so much that you can do. It is just really neat. The game caters for all sorts of styles. You just have to find the one that fits you best.

DEAR SHOE,

THAT'S RIGHT YOU ARE A SHOE. THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT NOT BEING A SHOE BECAUSE IN MY MIND YOU ARE ONE AND THAT IS MOST UNFORTUNATE.
AS LONG AS I HAVE YOU CONCEPTUALIZED AS A SHOE IN MY IMAGINATION YOU SHALL REMAIN AS SUCH.
THIS MAKES ME WONDER WHETHER ALL PEOPLES AND OBJECTS CAN BE CONCEPTUALIZED AS SHOES AND THUS BECOME SUCH, GRANTING ME ABSOLUTE POWER OVER THEM. DO YOU HAVE A CLEVER ARGUMENT? NO YOU DON'T, YOU"RE A SHOE. SHOES CAN'T HAVE CLEVER ARGUMENTS.
I FEEL LIKE THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD HAS BEEN LIFTED OFF MY SHOULDERS NOW THAT EVERYTHING IS UNDER MY CONTROL, NOW THAT YOU ARE ALL SHOES. I NO LONGER HAVE TO ANSWER TO MY REGRETS AND PAST MISTAKES BECAUSE THEY ARE SIMPLY SHOES.

I get to paint and pretend that I can be good at art. @..@ Models are almost as fun to build as they are to curse at while building and then the games are a fun way to get together with some of my friends. Plus the story and books give me something to counter-balance the once lighthearted Star Wars novels that populate my book shelf.

For me, the only real thing I like are the matches themselves, and even that isn't 100% fun all the time. I dislike the painting and modeling (my Tyranid Battleforce kinda overwhelmed me, and I've only done a little in about 2 months of having it), and the occasional rules arguments with my friend really hurt, just because...well, they're my friends. I don't want to argue with them.

But all my friends were getting into it, and being both a D&D and hardcore strategy game player (board, video, or otherwise) , I decided to play 40K, by first vowing that I would never buy such overpriced models (which I have obviously broken).

The main reason I continue to play? My friends live a town away, about 25 miles, and without this, I would barely see any of them, aside from one who I fence with. (Shurgs) That's really it.

I like 40k (and fantasy and LOTR) for the feeling of fufilment when I pull of a great paint job or conversion or when you finish a squad or army and when you win and also the fun of losing and the funniness while playing.

Also I like space viking werewolves.
