I can see that, I am just saying it is probably better to have them in case you get a new Army idea...

Especially since the casters are typically cheaper to purchase than units and most jacks as well, there's no major reason to not buy them asap. Just sayin, no point in owning all of them right off bat since you can't USE all of them (or even most of them) at the same time.

So at the end of the day we agree, Lich Lord Venethrax has one of the most badass looking swords in the game and it is a crying shame that it has NO ADDED ABILITIES WHATSOEVER. Seriously, not even something like Thresher or Weapon Master (though he does get pseudo-weaponmaster against beasts).

I'm a new Cryx player too, and I can echo what is being said in this thread.

All our casters are great, to make up for the "weak" (but cheap and tricksy) jacks. Cryx is all about the casters, and we have the best there are.
You will NEED a scarlock, I don't know a single caster who can't use one of those, basically 3 free focus, for 2 points, bargain.
The deathjack for larger point brackets.
Banes, thralls or knights either is good, but knights are for assassinations and take downs, thralls are for smooshing enemy jacks and infantry. Tartarus is then the obvious choice.
Mechanithralls are great, 10 guys, 5 points, 1 point WA in brute thralls, who are like light jacks with fists. Then you add necrosurgeon, suddenly an unkillable unit of really heavy hitters, capable of ripping apart any jack they see, and heavy infantry is no longer safe. All this for about 10 points. (also only about 35-40 quid for the lot).
Any slayer chassis jack (except the corruptor-unless you take venthrax) is great, focus efficient, fast, and works well with any caster as a trick (Scaverous with a reaper, it's unholy)
The warwitch is a beast, free caster.
Also if playing against warmachine (not hordes, no no) The machine wraith is great. Even if it can't possess something successfully, it forces the opponent to waste focus ousting it, leaving a jack useless for a turn. then when thrown out, you can sacrifice it to stop things charging, leaving them open for a smack in the face from a slayer.

With casters, pDenny is lethal, and great to learn the game with. I like the Witchcoven, because let's face it, 9 focus is great to throw around, and they are HARD to assassinate, can't be charged (stealth) or shot. Then eGaspy can generate more focus (with banes) than he has a legal right to!

Like a lot of people have said, take a caster you like the look of, learn their spells, check Battlecollege, and build your army from that.
The above will give you a competetive list on their own, then add the rest for flavour or a speciific enemy.

Je consomme, donc, je suis.

Umm stealth doesn't stop charges.

pBastard and eLich don't really get much use out of a Skarlock, as they have very few spells worth spreading around.

The Corruptor doesn't do anything special for Venny at all, unless you're trying to connect it's Corrosion Damage type to Venny's Corrosion Continuous Effects Don't Expire rule, which does nothing for the Corruptor that doesn't cause Continuous Corrosion. However, I do love my Corrupter I've been running with the eBastard. Gets a lot of use out of Phantom Hunter to place it's special shots and runs effectively for just one Focus a turn. I run enough Seethers that I can't look at the Slayer or Reaper and think of either as Focus efficient. And I don't run Reapers anymore once Malice came out, he's just much more fun and effective.

And the Machine Wraith is effective vs Hordes too. Don't get too caught up on the possession as that will rarely work against good opponents. Instead focus on it's high speed and immune to non-magic attacks. It's very nice for getting across the board quickly and engaging shooting units or contesting/controlling Objectives, as it does cost a full point. Once used one vs Circle Druids, a Hordes army, to be a target for a Death Knell, which proceeded to wipe out two thirds of a unit who itself can't be targeted by spells.
