Darn good game.
I keep hearing good things about it, but doesn't it take, like, 6 hours to play? That's kind of a turn off for me.
For a short game, yes.
"Normal" games of Diplomacy take weekends to play.
And man, is it awesome. My advice would be to either spread it out over a couple of longer sessions or just do a turn every day or two with some people you see on a regular basis. Once you get the mechanics figured out and play it you'll understand how that can be reasonably done.
 this
Sorry to pursue the tangent:
Each turn is divided into three phases. 1) Discussing what you want to do. 2) Writing your orders, based on those discussions. 3) Resolving combat.
Combat is resolved using very simple rules, and each player can lend support to other players attacks and increase their chance of success. Other than deception, there is no "random" element. As a result, you can quite easily play at a distance - I think there are websites set up to support this.
One word of warning. It gets nasty (that's the point), so you really have to avoid anyone prone to sulking, getting "the face", or wondering off when they're losing.

I shall answer the op's question with another question. Would this thread have survived if the OP was not a mod?
In all seriousness, there is no secret to a good name. Some stick some don't. It was almost certainly just chosen from a list of fighty sounding words, Pipping 'Broadsword' or 'Battleaxe'.
Unfortunately Kid Kyoto, it was not a specially chosen word of power. Lexi-mages did not intricately weave Spondees, Iambs and Phyrruses into a word of impossible potency. If they did it would have been called:

The real answer was that it was named "Warhammer", because it was complimentary to "Chainmail", the Gygax (Genuflexts at the name) miniatures game that was around around the same time as D and D 1st edition was.
Back then, Cidital, and WD were complimentary to D and D and added extra fan based content, ( to hear GW tell it, they invented that too.) and WD was an additional resource for fans of D and D.
The figures came first, to be used with D and D, then as they were of better quality, Warhammer was brought to fruitation, based a more in depth, and more intricate game system from a renasance/ fantasy motif, and as the figure selection increased, the table top game came to light.
Thier table top was the boxed set of Heroquest, Battlemasters, and Space Crusade amongst attachments, and then on to metal miniatures for the "on a table topped" miniatures game. Scenery at the time came out of WD. They had the monthly scenarios, addentums and scenery plans in the issues.
They made money to start out based on Jackson and the others work, and the game branched out. MB paid them for the doff, until the editions of Battlemaster and space crusade ran thier course. ( same sort of games as MB was cranking out at crazy pace. Axis and Allies, Shogun, fortress america, battle masters, etc.etc.etc. There were a metric gak ton of games that were coming out from MB and Ideal that had bunches of miniaturs in them, and these games Space crusade, and Hero quest evolved into Warhammer Quest, and Space Hulk.
The rest, they say- is history.
I got into 40K when they first came out in the states with the three rhino set, 3 predator set, and the in issues of WD game rules. My first boxed set was the plastic beakies, and the metal ork set.
( I just got done stripping down a batch of them, so memories are serving me well right now. I have a good scar on my thumb from the tutorials from the WD to repose the marines.)
Hope that helps, I'd like others to chime in, as well, and lets get off of Kyoto. He's silly, but he's quality, and doesn't need bashing as much as some people that could to be taken down a peg.

Best with 7 people, a well stocked bar, and a whole day to play. We usually limit the "Lie to 5 people while making a deal with 1 person" phase to 15 minutes. Hard to limit the "You lying bastard" phase. Deciet always takes less time than outrage.
See that just sold me on the whole game right there, and I don't even know what it is, reminds me of goodtimes playing Jyhad/VTES and Lot5r. Shame my I left my old gaming group back in Kernow, otherwise I'd have picked one up.
Regarding the OP, my guess is the same as Surtur, something to do with Sigmar's Hammer, of course the fact it had 'War' in it as CT GAMER noted probably did grant it brownie points.

Empire in Flames is Mordhiem on steroids. I don't see how you'd think it gay, when you get to pretty much do what you want to with a basic rules set, and modification for your own stuff that works friggen awsome!
Run a group of adventurer heros with skermish rules, against a box of troops and a evil necromancer- ( 1 blister pack, and a box of figures, which you can make into your own armies of individualzed troopers. Base troops, heros, monsters.
Then run them over a ready made table and fight it out for the little village, add in and get the RPG element to the game, and you have the makings of a great time, and continual game in the old school way of doing gaming.
If you could do that with 40K, that would be a far step up from that BS that they tried to pull on us with that Kill team crap.

If you look at a number of other products put out by other companies at the time they had simple names like "Broadsword" or "Chainmail"... I was told once they wanted something in a similar vein and that it was chosen because the designers thought the name mirrored the ambiguity of the strategic nature of the game, by neither being overtly defensive or offensive... representative of how the player chose the way their army could be used.
The use of the name "Warhammer" is actually quite clever... it has an energized quality to it by virtue of its two component words... "war" and "hammer" both of which are loaded words. War and hammer are both nouns and verbs... "you go to war" or "you war with your enemy"... "you carry a hammer" or "you hammer him down"... that gives it a certain power to convey more imagery than simply the weapon "warhammer."
