I feel the same sometimes. The main problem I have with all you mech vet players is that you constantly badger anyone who plays guard and proposes a list that isn't mech vets.
It always seems to me that most mech vet players are power gamers and use the lists solely because they know it will be easiest to combat any enemy with it. While it certainly isn't true for all players, those with mech vets play the game only to win, as opposed to making sure you are enjoying the game itself.

I really consider tourney play a whole seperate game, one filled with attitudes and armies I'd personally rather avoid. I don't think things like the allies rules and the fervor with which people are already salivating over all sorts of silly alliance combo builds is likely to change that for me.

Vet Squad:
29.00 = Cadian Plastic Kit
33.00 = 3 Metlagun bits from the Warstore plus shipping
37.25 = Chimera
99.25 USD
Yeah, wow. What a deal, that's almost 150pts right?
Haha. Who the hell pays $30 for three Meltaguns? You're out of your friggin mind. You can get them for a fraction of that on EBay.

You think I'm an idiot or something? I have the internet too, ya know; I checked Ebay for pricing.
Search for meltagun turned up 120 results and I went through them all. Barely any were actually imperial guard ones, most were Space Marine bits, and half of the IG results were OOP metal figures that had melta guns. Those were actually the cheapest option, which is crazy, and most of the bits were selling from around 4-7 bucks with about 3 being the mean shipping price.
There isn't a cave of imperial guard melta guns breeding in the wild here. These things are in demand and people are charging crazy stupid prices for them.

People wax lyrical about ebay, frankly I've found it to be of little use except if you want a slight discount on very popular items (infantry squad, chimeras, maybe russes).
GW, however, sell melta/plasma guns at £6 for 5. That's £1.20 a gun, which isn't *too* shabby. Automatically Appended Next Post: tgf wrote:http://bitspudlo.com/t/category/216-bitsbox-dot-eu/237-infantry-weapons-and-accessories

I have ordered from them several times. They are in poland, and do decent work, a bit bubbly towards the sprue side but that ok for the price. English is not their first language but then again, I will not stop a fool and his money from being parted.
I made an airborne guard list, it was themed. 6 squads of demo vets, and company command. in 3 Valkyries and 4 Vendettas. The Valkyries squads have flamers, the Vendetta squads have meltas. Its that easy. The idea was not to go beardy but to go themed. They do well against almost everything but can be beaten but a solid foot list with decent av as I am all A12. My final cost wasn't bad. I think I paid 40 bucks a valk/vend from the warstore. Then I used wargames factory grey coats at another 80 bucks. So I got the whole army done for about 300. including bits I had to buy.

I use an all vet list, but i use it for fluff reasons. I wanted to put to gether a drop troop list with lots of valks and vendettas, and it didnt seem fitting to put "normal" guards men in as these guys would be the shock troops that take the initial landing zones if marines arnt available. so vets and carapace armour allround it was.
having said that to balance it out i decided i wasn't going to take infantry platoons so that means no heavy weapons teams or special weapons teams and heavy tanks are out too

+1 This
I am putting together an Elysian Drop Troop army (using the IA #8 Rules) and their fluff states that they are more "elite" then other guard armies. It makes sense to see an army of Vets in regards to this both in terms of fluff and in terms of my wallet! Dont get me wrong I am considering (and probably will build eventually) an airborne army with the platoons system but for now Veterans are what I am going for.
To say that people who take Vets to win is a grossly inaccurate lable, not all players do that and often it is the wallet that rules what list you run and in this case, that would mean veterans fit the bill nicely. However as mentioned before some regiments (Steel Legion, Drop Troops, ect.) run the mech lists/veteran lists that seem to be so popular today. You can easily be fluffy with a veteran heavy army, not all players are in it to just win it.

I'd much rather put time into a handful of Vet squads than platoons, simply due to the amount of time involved. 2 bare bones basic platoons comes to 50 individual models. That's not even counting extra infantry squads, heavy weapon teams or special weapon teams. (Pretty much the only reasons I would even want to take a platoon) 2 vet squads comes to 20 models.
Big time difference, especially at the speed I paint, and it allows me to convert and personalise the models more.
