I dont play fantasy but i can see that there is no definate poster boy like 40k. Like when i think 40k as much as it pains me to say i think about an ultramarine bolter in hand shooting hordes of something while getting shot and in the same poster their enemies shots just fizzling out against his armour or bouncing off. But when i think fantasy i think of like a bar fight where everone has their own advantages.

Arguably, Fantasy has specific poster-boys/girls for *each* army, rather than the game as a whole.

For the Empire, I'd think one of their most recognizable units is the Witch-Hunter, even though that's more a FRP hold-over than an actual unit in the game (or it may be now, I haven't played WHFB in at least 20 years). It's the Solomon Kane vibe he gives off with the hat.

The Brettonians have their Griffon Knights. The Wood Elves have their Wardancers. Vampire Counts have... whatever the hell that boss Vampire was. Not Genevieve, the female book heroine.... the... gah, all I can think of is Von Strahd, but that's Ravenloft... anyway....

Tomb Kings have... Nagrash? Some Liche or another.

Slaan have a giant Lizard Shaman-King (not Jim Morrison).

Skaven have their Rat-Ogres or Plague Monks. They're one of my most favorite factions of any fantasy setting. It's not surprising that I played Ratonga in EQ2.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

In Fantasy, armour saves are modified by the strength of the attacker. Anything S4 or higher takes points off your armour save, with S10 allowing no save. Ward saves (the invulnerable equiv) are unaffected though. I think its a great rule, one I kinda wish was in 40k...

Strength used to affect armor similarly in 40k until they took it out and replaced it with the AP stat instead. Now armor either works against a weapon or it doesn't. Was done to speed up the game apparently...

Sounds good. I'll probably start with Daemons of Chaos since I can play 40k and WHFB with them.

Any suggestions on a good starter group to go with? I am wanting few strong units what have some sort of interesting rules, maybe cause fear, strong magic, something along those lines. The Demon Princes look pretty gnarly.

This isn't thr best way to start Fantasy for two reasons - first, base types. If you stick them on square fantasy bases, you'll potentially annoy people you play 40k against. If you put them on round bases, you need to make or find special unit trays that take the round bases and space them out correctly (this has a lot of issues because the smaller square bases are smaller than normal 40k round bases).

Second is that units and unit sizes that are good in 40k are going to have problems in Fantasy, and vice versa, since the games play completely different ways and put emphasis on different aspects of the game.

Making a daemon army work in both 40k and Fantasy requires a lot of planning and also basically still buying 2 armies, even if you go the round base and movement tray route.

Half the daemons in my 40k armies are on square bases and I've never once had anyone complain about it in a 40k game. Base concerns are not going to be the big problem you seem to think they are. Been using my fantasy based daemons as 40k support for a good 20 years now without a problem, ever.

Sure you might find someone out there who complains about it, but so what? It isn't the end of the world. There is more crossover and compatiblity between the two now as well, especially after they made the soul grinder available in Fantasy, so there is less need for buying of too many different extra units to fill out one side or the other. Sure unit sizes might work a little differently in each system, but again it really isn't all that big a deal. Combine smaller 40k units to make more solid fantasy blocks and things work out just fine. With square and round slotta bases in all the kits now it is easy to just base everything for fantasy, where lining up in neat little blocks is so important, and will not cause too many issues playing on the 40k side at all.

Complaining in a 40k game that you opponent's minis have square bases is comparable to complaining that your opponents minis are painted in an off color scheme. It really doesn't impact the game just offends the complainers sensibilities which really has no specific impact on the game play itself.

Good Points on both sides, but it looks like I ran some math and determined that the Islands of Blood started kit is probably more up my alley as its only $100 and the bloody fantasy book itself is $75.

Building a Daemon Army of 1000 points will cost twice that. Part of the point is to have enough points in two armies to play some decent games at home.
