Boy, am I glad that my local group doesn't give a damn about proxying. Still everyone aims at fielding well looking models. This way everyone can try out stuff before buying and we still have fun with the armies.

My armies:
Eldar
Necron
Chaos Space Marines
Grey Knights
Imperial Knights
Death Guard

I think it all comes down to personal choice and personal standards in the end. Some folks have higher standards than others. Whether they are "art snobs" is a matter of semantics.

When it comes down to proxies/counts as, I should say it should be ok to use anything in place of anything else if a couple of basic requirements are met.

First, the base used to represent the chosen model should be the same size or bigger. The reason being for blast template hits. No one should get an advantage for having a smaller base than the actual model would have had.

Second, the proxied model should roughly take up the same space (volume) as the intended model. The 2 reasons for this are Line of Sight issues and Cover Save determinations. No one should find it any easier to hide their proxy to avoid getting shot at, nor allow themselves the chance to gain a cover save where the actual model would not have one due to its normal size.

In the end, Warhammer 40,000 is a game with the agreement of your opponent of what has what stats/special rules. It never hurts to discuss with your opponent before the match starts, any special concerns that may occur or maybe misinterpreted, due to model unfamiliarity. It will save a lot of arguments/headaches/hurt feelings in the long run if you do answer any questions you have in advance, that you or your opponent may have.

Cowards will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!

Different people use different models as counts as. While YOU may not think an avatar would make a suitable dread counts as, another may disagree with you as they want their dread to be more streamlined. a similer example is, I use the giant servo skull dice holders as my jokero. They are painted up and I justify it that my jokero are smaller and used their abilities to create small custom rides for themselves. The only people who complained were those who hated acing jokero in hopes of causing me to not field jokero. The rest of the locals are ok with the idea as is the TO.They have seen plenty of action in the local tourneys.

As I said before, we are all just a bunch of faceless name on a random online forum. Meaningless in the original poster's area as it is the actual local people he will be playing and the local TO whose ideas and opinions count for him.

I didn't play before end of 5th, but I heard stories about those more fun days from people that did play here. . +2inv +2 re-rollable save on 2d6 with a 48" charge using psychic powers or just 24" normal charge. Or eldar exarchs flying with 2xd3 puls lasers with a +2inv save. IG and ork armies dieing turn 1 to biker characters with a virus weapon.

As long as it is the proper size, it doesn't matter. My IG right now is made out of resing infinity models, because I like them better then GW ones and if someone thinks am WAAC, because my squads have HMG armed volenteers as Autocannons and chainrifles galwagians as melta vets, then it is his problem.
