I sit in a gutted grocery store, eking what little warmth I can from some birthday candles left behind. Such frivolous materials are good for little else these days. As I feel what life I have left seep from my body I reflect on how we arrived here.

Canada was ill suited to the pogroms of purity set by our neighbors. We were too diverse, too fractured for any faction to rise above the others. This did not stop us from trying. Our polite masks dropped away as we tore each other to pieces. The world looked on in horror, too scared to involves themselves. The francophones are cornered to the eastern lands but they are well fortified. The westerlies have been carved out by uncountable anglophone tribes, divided by faiths, nations even by generations. There is no more "Canada", now it is just a corpse and we the eaters of carrion living amongst its bones.

The winters have come and many of us won't make. My blood stained sword lays at my side, one of the few weapons left to us, a once peaceful peoples. It was only ever meant to hang on my wall. How quickly we slide backwards. I will not survive the cold and the dark, not alone. Perhaps another will find my corpse and take up my blade; perhaps it may win them a few more days of warmth and life.

The cold fades away. At least death is still kind.

Probably I'll be straight-up murdered outright by an efficient means that gives no regard to my suffering whatsoever because I won't be treated as a human being whose value to society is high enough to warrant having a person shoot me with a gun.

That's what humans would do to me in the scenario the OP described.

Don't worry, you will be treated like a human being in the extermination process. Your status as a human is WHY you will be exterminated.
