In our theories, the Exodites turned into the Wood Elves, them being far more concerned with nature, and far less obsessed with those gems that adorn their clothes and armour...

I would say it is more like comparing what they just recently did to WHFB to what they're doing to 40k. Maybe that is why it is felt more acutely this time around.

Given most of the replies in this thread, I don't think many share your feelings. Again, every edition since 4th has majorly tweaked with the core rules, and the 4th was criticized for not tweaking enough. Like Sgt Smudge said, a 5th edition army would not be usable in the current game, despite the fact that it was only 2 editions ago (and only something like a few years ago, as opposed to near two decades since 3rd edition). And no, no current Codex dates back to that time anymore, so the inevitable "Invalidate all of the rules" has happened at least once during your gaming life.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Frankly after playing with the current mechanics for the past 15 years and watching how its been "tweaked" into what it is now I think its about time, 7th is fubar and I welcome the change to the rule set.

For me, worse case scenarios is that is just different, 40k is, already to the point where you can build "I win button" army so perhaps we can get abit of thinking back into the game with GW giving things like allying deathstars the axe and have proper close games. Command points in particular are something I'm excited about, you will have a resource at your disposal to potentially change the flow of the battle and limiting it to one point per phase seems good from what we know of them.

The enemies of Mankind may employ dark sciences or alien weapons beyond Humanity's ken, but such deviance comes to naught in the face of honest human intolerance back by a sufficient number of guns.

I didn’t say you could still use a 5th ed codex today. But i can't remember a time were i couldn’t use my codex and had to wait for the new one. And yes it was 3rd were we had Strategy Ratings i remember have a Rating of 1

It's happened twice before - in 1993 when 2nd edition was released and all the 1st edition army lists were made obsolete. There was a year or so before the first Codex was released (Space Wolves, which was also the last army list published for 1st edition). Then again five years later in 1998 when 3rd edition was released. The same thing happened when 4th edition and 6th edition Warhammer Fantasy Battles, and Age of Sigmar were released. In all those cases, "get-you-by" army lists were published so existing players could continue to use their armies. I like to think of these points as being the ".0" versions;
1st edition: 1.0 (with the Book of the Astronomicon being 1.0.5 and the battle and Vehicle Manuals 1.1)
2nd edition: 2.0
3rd edition: 3.0
4th - 7th edition: 3.1 to 3.4
8th edition: 4.0

Personally, I believe that both games are best played using only the basic army lists; Codexes having the page count to add special rules is where the rot sets in.

2nd edition 40k with the little black book
3rd edition 40k with the armies in the back
6th edition fantasy with the ravening hordes.

Some of the best gaming ever.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.
