Crescent City Fl..

We live just out of town off two dirt roads. the town's pop is roughly 1500. We can't get mail out here so we have a POBox in town and a grocery other than that we have a 35 minuet drive to the next town for everything else. I have to drive an hour forty to the game shop. We decided to live out here just before I got out of the Army. We don't want to deal with a lot of people and their problems or an HOA. We homestead and I also commission paint from time to time. We're not off the grid but have to be fairly self reliant. Every day is a work day out here.

Remember kids, Games Workshop needs you more than you need them.

In the middle of New Mexico here; Truth or Consequences, a town of around 6,000. It's 75 miles to the nearest game shop in Los Cruces, and that's mostly rpgs and comics. No idea where the nearest shop is that sells Warhammer, much less has Warhammer games.

The hard part about moving from a fairly big city like St. Louis to this place is... well, everyone here grew up together and are pretty darn clannish. If you're from somewhere else, it's hard to get into the local social groups precisely because you didn't grow up there. In contrast, the people in St. Louis were more interested in what you had in common with them than whether they went to school with you and already knew pretty much everything there is to know about you.

"Truth or Consequences"? That is a strange name for a town. Sounds rather ominous actually... Almost like a threat.

Dakka Flakka Flame, that was one hell of a fascinating post. I can actually completely relate to some of your experiences from when I was a kid too, although it wasn't necessarily because I was living as remote as you. But I did live in foreign countries that didn't have all of the luxuries the developed world had, so it meant you had to fall back on more basic things and people than you normally would in a big city.

I've been told I would love Alaska, I have never been. I am going to highjack my own thread here and ask this tho: Is it true a lot of people go missing up there? I heard there will be boards in some of the towns/cities with pictures of people who have disappeared. Not all from crime related events but just because of how remote some of the area is, someone has a problem and can't get out of it, and no one knows what happened to them. Is that something everyone is aware of up there?

Haha, I'm actually embarrassed I didn't proofread it better. As time goes on I get worse and worse about fixing mistakes unless they are underlined in red.

Alaska has good points and bad points. It's great for some people, and terrible for others.

I can't remember what the statistics are, but yeah the rate of people going missing is supposed to be crazy high. Is it not common to have missing person posters on bulletin boards in other places? I thought they were normal, like wanted posters. Going out into the woods definitely has risks. Again, I can't remember the statistics but basically your risk of death goes up the further you are from an emergency room, which is definitely a downside to living in a rural place.

Originally the town was named 'Hot Springs' for the obvious reason. Then in the 1950s, the host of a game show called 'Truth or Consequences' announced a contest where if a town changed it's name to that of the show, he'd come down and do the show there for free publicity.

The show was more goofy than ominous. The questions were pretty silly (an example - Q: What is the number one use of alligator hide? A: Covering alligators. ) and the consequences were along the lines of 'pie in the face'.

That is a great story

Love New Mexico. Wandered around Bisti/De-Na-Zin, Chaco Culture, Bandolier, Carlsbad Caverns, El Malpais, and several more places in between. Haven’t been to SW New Mexico yet, but next time I may swing that way to see Gila and Cibila National Forest. Truth or Consequences is about 2 hours out from Albuquerque isn’t it?

Black Bases and Grey Plastic Forever:My quaint little hobby blog.

40k- The Kumunga Swarm (more)
Count Mortimer’s Private Security Force/Excavation Team (building)
Kabal of the Grieving Widow (less)

Plus other games- miniature and cardboard both.

@Vulcan - I actually Googled T or C as I wasn't sure if you were kidding or if it was perhaps slang ... but it's real. What a fantastic name!

It's a nice place... to visit. Elephant Butte Lake can be fun, except on the major summer holidays. Just don't move here.

Or maybe y'all should, then I'd have someone to game with!

Yes, two hours south of Alberquerque right on the interstate. It's not the middle of nowhere... but you can probably see it from here.
