To be fair, Hollywood is full of British actors playing Americans.

But to be fair, they mostly do OK with the 'American' accent, whatever they think that is, of course.

It gets dumb when films portray "Americans" a certain way, not so much in how they handle their accents.

Seriously. This is Robert The Bruce. This is akin to casting Benydtich Custardpatch as Robert E Lee.

Yeah, just like you're from California, aren't you?

I'd rather have Chris Pine than Gerry Butler, all things considered. I'd rather have Mel Gibson than Butler, in fact.

Chris Pine’s accent sounded fine to me, but then I’m from England and I’m not an expert on what accents in 14th century Scotland were like.

Since you live a little closer, I suppose your opinions carry a bit more weight but...

It's definitely a yank doing a "Scottish" accent, but it's not that bad a job of it. About as good as when its done the other way round.

The only times I can remember him playing a medieval character, he was playing an immortal Egyptian, or two different kings of England.

On another note, there's been a lot of historical (or historical-looking) dramas like this - Rome, Game of Thrones, Vikings, The Last Kingdom, Outlander - in the last decade or so. Is there more money around to finance them, or are they cheaper to make? is someone running a chainmail loom that can churn the stuff out by the metre?

There're no new stories, so they go back to the originals.
People are bored of reboots and remakes, and historicals, even fictional ones, seem to be the current favourite.

They get to reuse the costumes and sets, too.

For once, this looks like a medieval based movie where the costumes and armour are not completely terrible. Chris Pine actually appears to be wearing authentic riveted mail

No?

Well, I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest that maybe, just maybe, it’s not really something your opinion carries much weight on?

Big deal. I'm from the Boston area. Have you seen The Departed? Walberg is the only one who gets the accent right. Because he's from here.

But since almost every movie of note is made by the US wouldn't that make any non American opinion weightless?

Pine does a "oh gak, here we go" face very well. Appropriate for marching into a battle

It's fine to me, but thats because I'm only interested in real Scottish accents when they are from beautiful women.

I'm not particularly fussed about Pine being an American doing a Scottish character. He's an actor. Actors do that.

However, two things. First, if he butchers or stereotypes it, that sentiment will vanish fast.

Secondly, I do find it interesting that there's clearly a push for actors/actresses to be the "appropriate" fit for a character, and very little has been said on this by wider media.
There's been various backlashes Scarlett Johannson has had, the more recent comments about Jack Whitehall playing the "first camp gay Disney character" (I thought that was in the remake of Beauty and the Beast?), and Ruby Rose being called out as the "wrong kind of lesbian" in order to play Batwoman - but nothing about this, as far as I've seen.

It's almost like all white people and characters are the same. /s

Bottom line, they're all actors. Let them act. But if they're going to act, they'd better act well.
