I feel like the "CoS isn't supported" thing isn't exactly true. Sure they aren't likely to get new models outside of random characters but for a ragtag collection of Old World armies they've done pretty well IMO. AFAIK the Broken Realms books have added more options for cities with Har Kuron and Settlers Gain, and the mix and match style of CoS units + another faction fleshes out the setting nicely and shows that the cities really are multicultural hubs where the different nations of the Realms collide. Plus they did well in competitive for a while IIRC.

This guy gets it.

Dancingjoker wrote:So I'm just getting into the game and wondering about which army to invest in. I really like most fantasy Elves, and some units from both Lumineth and Cities of Sigmar look really nifty. But others in each faction I really dislike the look of. Aesthetics are important to me, a bit more so than building an optimal army. At the same time while I'm willing to give up some stuff for a cool look I do want to be able to field something that isn't wiped out every game. So which is easier / better to build: Cities of Sigmar focusing on elven troops, or Lumineth without the ox-people?

I would wait. Kurnothi will likely be out in a year or so (covid,.. so who knows?) and there will be the Malerian army. I would advise to pick the model range you like the most. As the army will have ups and downs over time and if you don't love (painting) the models you will become disinterested in the army. I played Wood Elves all 8th ed. Still loved the models but oh boy,...

Kanluwen wrote:And no, it wasn't "a decent slice of Wood Elf" stuff. It was basically the whole damn range. The only things left are Wild Riders/Sisters of the Thorn, the Nomad Prince, and Eternal Guard/Wildwood Rangers. That's not even discussing what got moved to Sylvaneth. The only addition they've seen was the Sisters of the Watch, a rebranding of the Everqueen's Guard into a Wanderers unit.

And then I'll suggest if they want Elves? Go for Scourge Privateers as they're the most complete range, and the Black Ark Corsair kit while aging is not seeming like it is going anywhere anytime soon.

Wanderers lost their metal range. Warhawk Riders and Wardancers are the two units that got dropped. The rest is stuff that fits fine. Even my Mounted mage from 5th ed is a Sister of the Thorn champion. It's not hard to make things work (Wardancers can be Rangers even, and Warhawk Riders can be proxied as something else in the book). They lost the great eagle and Great Stag but those were heroes and Wood Elves got 16 unique hero sculpts. A little extravagant and unreasonable to expect would survive.

i would not recommend Scourge Privateers. They are limited to what, 3 kits?

I think people were genuinely surprised the first book came out. And now the new VC surprised me.

Can't say that I was.
What became Cities was a good chunk of the 1.o Grand Alliance tome. And they were referenced and built upon enough throughout various 1.0 products.
I figured that was leading somewhere....
