This isn't 1990 anymore, the
40k range is massive and not everyone can have everything that ever existed in the range of days gone by.
R&H was my favourite
FW model range and then it got canned. Did I take to the forums and complain for years on end? No. I got my finger out and used Chaos Cultists, Cadians, Catachans,
GSC, Necromunda, Warriors of Chaos, Ogre Kingdoms, Skaven, Beastmen and anything else I could get my hands on to build a horde of crazy mooks, then I got best converted army at an event because of it.
Converting and kitbashing is not hard and it is not expensive unless you refuse to make compromises. Given the option of imperfect Steel Legion or no Steel Legion, I take imperfection every time.
This is the way. Guard have always been one of the more kitbashed armies, and that’s what gave them so much charm. Often you would see a one of a kind army on the field. I had WW2 Russian conscripts, samurai rough riders, and German special forces scions, with Catachan infantry, and Cadian vets and Mordian officers.
And that was before we got the incredible range of 3rd party sculpts that rival
GW designs, and usually at half the price. I doubt
GW will get back into varied regiments since every independent designer of WW2,
DND, or Sci-fi minis can just slap on some grenades and a lasgun to make a rival product what will hold up in court.
