Wow, it seems half of the people here don't really know what the issue is. The U.S. has always had the chaos black and skull white primer colors . The issue is a new batch of them with new labels that specifically say "Chaos Black" on the can. The previous line of cans have always had "Black Primer" on the label and I never had a problem with those cans either.

Slightly OT, but I've found that the Design Master Flat Black spray found at Michael's craft stores works wonders on plastic minis. No detail lost, though the finish is more semi-gloss or satin than flat, and can be really smooth and some folks may not like that.
I got the best of both worlds when I used the cheaper Design Master spray as the main base and then just quickly dusted the GW Black Primer on the top of the Design Master. Gives it a slight tooth for the paint and removes some of the semi-gloss look.

I have had no problem with it in the UK. It seems like GW send all there defective stuff to you guys in the states. That was a joke so please dont get offended. I have had no problems myself although there was a period a while back when they had defective matt varnish and recalled a whole batch. We could not get any for months.
My main Gripe is that they stopped doing the Blood angels red, ultramarines blue and space wolves grey spray can as I did not relise how usefull they are untill they were gone. I did not even notice they were gone. I just started my painting BA and sprayed the first sqaud with what little red spray I had and asked my bro if he had anymore being a vet BA painter. He was very suprised and asked where I got the paint and if i had more to give it to him.. It was just lying around at home and I went to GW to get sme more and lo and behold they dont do anymore and have not for some time. No wonder My bro was so eager to get his hands on that half empty can I had.

Another vote for Armory primers. Just like any primer, as long as you use them when it not too humid and you make sure the primer and the surface to be primed are about the same temperature, it works like a charm.

Here's another vote for Krylon Ultra-Flat Black, Flat White and any of Testor's Model Masters. Krylon provides an excellent prime coat for cheap and I've never had problems with it, unlike GW's sprays which I have ruined plastic figs of mine in the past on two separate occasions. Ditto with their varinish (aka Purity Seal). I put way too much worki into my minis (building and painting) to have them ruined by substandard primer or sealant. On top of it, Krylon is cheaper to boot while being better quality while Testors is high quality, but pricey (no more expensive than GW's overpriced Hobby Supplies though).

The shop I work at got a credit for the cans we bought and a promise to fix the problem ASAP. The way I understand it the new stuff was made by an AK ( boy here comes all the southern redneck inbred jokes) company for the US GW. The sample product from the company was supposedly better than the old Black Primer, however some where between the samples and the mass production something went horribly wrong. The first few cans we used came out like tar. They got a little better when we shook the holy hell out of them for a half hour. but not really that much better. The biggest problem at hand is there will be a bit of a delay in fixing the problem so if you have to use the GW stuff make sure you find some of the old cans or use what you got sparingly till they catch back up.

At my shop we got the new spray in last week. Used a can to prime some Tau devilfish and I think the stuff works fine. It's very watery, so you need an extra coat, but becuase it's so watery it went on and dried very smooth, almost no loss of detail that I could see. Haven't tried it on regular figs, but for plastic tanks I don't think theres a problem. Well, I don't think there's a problem aside from paying $10 for $2 can of spray paint.

The new U.S. trade order form lists white, black, matte, and blood red as the only sprays currently available. I have been told, however that they're bringing the whole line back (to include goblin green, yay!) with the new formulation. I haven't gotten any of the new white yet (maybe next week) but almost anything would have to be better than the old stuff. And, no, the guy who told me wasn't a red shirt. The last red shirt I even saw was being beamed down by a Romulan while Kirk was chatting up a green b**ch.

That's what I heard too. The local GW here is offering to refund any of the new sprays when they get the good(old) stuff back.

Hahaha! Right, you cheeky git! I still don't get why people buy GW's hobby supplies when better and vastly cheaper alternatives are out there. Better yet, depending on the brand you pick, you won't have the color formulation changed or dropped from the line up at a whim.

Well, I think alot of it has to do with staying what works for you. My experience some 12 years into this hobby and another 10 years before with metal figs in general has shown me not to mess with what works for you.
I never use anything but GW primer on their plastics. Now having said that I have had a discount and or store beni's for more than a decade, so I am not usually paying full retail. I used armory brand stuff for a long time on the old Gernadier and Ral Partha figs. When I first got into GW I used them to near disaster on my GW stuff, so I stoped using them. I used testors for a while too but just did not like them. I tried Krylon for a while no problem on the metals I like Krylon alot on metal figs but there a far less metal figs now adays with GW. Krylon fuzzed and caked a fair amout of GW plastics the few times I used em so now their not in my plastics section of primer.
I have heard good things about the new krylon for plastics but like I said I am pretty good with the primer GW makes, thats was until this latest batch. I have heard good things about the duplicolor line of auto body primer but have not as of yet used them.
The other thing that I have noticed over the year beside the rediculusly high price of "black primer" that GW makes is that it seems to last a hell of alot longer that anything else I use. I use a fair amount of primer. If its not help a cusotmer get a good primer coat on a fig at the shop of working on my own stuff I primer 20 plus figs a week easy. I do several lite coats to get that smooth over all coverage. Probably 20% more than what the avergae painter would use on a fig. I have to say no other can of primer last as long as the GW one. I have checked volumes and weight on the can and all that. I even did a few trial tests where I shot a boat lod of figs for a contract job. I went through about 30% more figs with the GW can than I did with a can of Krylon. I did this for a toal of 3 cans of primer. The krylon ones used almost 4 cans, there was barely anything left in it. Now for 3 cans of GW you can buy about 8 or so cans of the Krylon. I will give ya that I just like the results of the GW stuff.

Posted By fullheadofhair on 07/13/2006 10:06 AMI have always sworn by GW black undercoat. I have tried others but not liked them. This new recipe is a lot more watery and changes the way you have to undercoat. Personally I think it is actually not that good. The FLGs I go to has had so many complaints about the new paint that they have stopped ordering the GW stuff and ordered Armory. Way to go to let the competition in. I didn't understand why they changed it. Why would GW change something that a lot of people like in preference to competitors? (I think I now the an$wer though). I have one can of old stuff left. I hope it is a can of everlasting paint.
Ditto. My Guard army was done using the old stuff. I have one can left. Since the black actually shows up as the base colour of the model (for all the cloth bits), it's hard to replace. Just gotta stretch out that last can for all it's worth....

Posted By Captain Vyper on 07/23/2006 12:45 PM Well, I think alot of it has to do with staying what works for you. My experience some 12 years into this hobby and another 10 years before with metal figs in general has shown me not to mess with what works for you.
That's exactly what I'm getting at. My experience is roughly eqivalent, having started in the mid 80's with Ral Partha, Grenadier, and GW metals, as well as those much revered plastic beakies. Yet, for me, every single time I tried GW sprays, they sucked. Perhaps it was bad luck or something, but that's been my experience. I've never had a problem with Testors or Krylon, and only once with Armory (back when they too tried to change formula). Likewise, my experience with GW's other hobby products has fallen well short of those with other manufacturers. Few things are as irritating as having to franticly scrub off bad primer on a figure you've labored ten, twenty, even thirty hours on perfecting. Worse is when it's bad varnish, where just as much time has gone into the paint job. Anyhow, at least it sounds like GW is trying to correct the problem right away instead of their usual pretending the problem doesn't exist and hoping people will forget. I just rather not ever take the risk, and as such, stick to my tried and true brands. Also, for those concerned about price, you can get three to five cans of Krylon ($2-$3 ea) for one can of GW ($10). Even if one can doesn't "last as long", three or more are guaranteed to last longer than the one can, while costing less.
