So on the Land raider you can place the sponsons in two different spots. when measuring to shoot from a vehicle you measure from the haul right? but if its a template weapon you measure from the actual gun. If i am wrong please correct me

No, you would measure LoS and range from the weapon itself, regardless of if it is a Template weapon.

Yep. And don't be too cute with where you put the guns on a vehicle, unless you enjoy being hassled about modeling for advantage.

Well I doubt that you would get blasted for MoA on a Land Raider, as you have a choice on where to put the sponsons. It's not like you're putting the weapons where they wouldn't normally be, you're putting them on one of their designated places.

I was expressly told to place my LR's sponsons forward by the GW staff.
This was, of course, before I realized they don't always know what they're talking about.

Well you don't have too, but placing them at the front gives you two advantages:
1: You could get an extra 1-2" of range.
2: Troops disembarking from the side hatches won't block LoS for the sponsons.

Yeah I know. Also, they pointed out that with the sponsons in the back, it's easier for enemies to block the exits on the Land Raider.

Actually with the sponsons in the front it is easier to block all the exits You need more squads (or a really large squad) to do it but you can block each side with a 5 man squad and the front with another 5 man or a 10 man.
My Crusader has the Sponsons forward mounted so that all guns have the same effective range; the downside is that it is very difficult to disembark a 16 man squad from it (but then as it is Codex not SW nor BT I don't even have access to 16 man squads).
Having the sponsons in back does mean you can use both Side and front door to disembark and still have your squad in coherency(which you must do anyway)

There is something called an emergency disembark from a vehicle that has it's exits blocked but there is some downside to doing that that I can't remember off hand. I think you can't move or shoot or you have to take a pinning test and you can't move during the movement phase, something like that.

Basically you're pinned. You can get out anywhere within 2" of the hull but can't do anything else for the turn.

Bit of a difference. Emergency disembark you can't do anything for the rest of the turn. Pinned units can't do anything until the end of their following turn.
I put my land raider sponsons in the front position, just like to pictures on pages 81, 82 and 83 of Codex:Space Marines.

Just as a note every model shown in C: SM shows the sponsons in the back position except the Redeemer so I would imagine quite a few people have built theirs that way. Front is definitely better and I need to modify my crusader (was built playing 4ed).

There's the old joke that the Russians always put them at the back, as an added "incentive" for their Troops to get stuck in.

I stupidly put my Redeemer's sponsons at the back, they were stuck fast before I realised my error, and have regretted it ever since...

I want to see someone put both sponsons on the same side of the land raider.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

Seen it done with one guys Redeemers for delicious broadside Flaming. Granted, they were magnetised, but still.
I slapped him with the Rawstick and refused to let any of his other models fire (they all had Helments on) unless we played it as one on each side.

But where in the BRB does it say that sponsons have to be on different sides? Or are we just using common sense and what the word 'sponson' means?

Where in the BRB does it say you can convert your models?

Who said it was converting? Just because GW's models are constructed like that doesn't mean to say that you HAVE to do it like theirs, or that they're even legal, heck, they've got a scout with a storm bolter in the SW codex, pg 76.

And since when have GW cared about following the RaW in their pictures? And I never said it was converting. I said "Where in the BRB does it say you can convert your models? " Yay semantics! But yeah, I would class it as modelling for advantage myself.

Ok, where does it say you can use converted models then? But this is getting very silly and off topic now. I think we should stop.

I find it funny on the LR because the pictures show the sponsons on the back, but not only would it be better in-game to put them on the front, but logically... I wouldn't want my 10 man terminator squad exiting the door the is right in front of my lasguns. (I mean this in a 'real life' example and fully understand that shooting happens before movement in-game)

Please note - terms like 'always/never' are carried with the basic understanding that there are exceptions to the rule, and therefore are used to mean generally...
