Ive been playing 40k for a while now but have always been a huge fan of WWII. How is FoW compared to 40k?

I haven't played 40K for a number of years but I would say that there is enough similarity in the mechanics that you can tell FOW was derived from GW games in some ways but I think it feels quite different in play. And there are some mechanics that are unique to FOW.

40K is a "skirmish" game really. FOW is not, so in that respect they are very different.

But if you love WW2, you'll love FOW.

From reading the rules, it looks like FoW is based around teams such that one 'team' is often treated by the rules much like how 40k treats a single model. Looks cool, though. I kind of think it would be neat to see the FoW guys do something non-historical to see how they'd handle it, but they liek the historicals it seems.

A Flames of War "Team" is a single stand -- either one vehicle, gun and crew or several foot soldiers.

These teams are grouped into platoons (usually) and these platoons are the basic manuver and fire element.

Yup... And a team is, in many ways, treated much like a 1 wound model from 40k.

That's not a bad thing, just a way to conceptualize things. it's a good thing, in that it makes big battles a bit more workable.

(The game I spam is a slightly different scale, and a 10-man infantry squad is three bases that act together.)

Sounds great, thank you Guys. I really appreciate it. Are the armies pretty balanced or no? Cause i can just imagine seeing 2000 Russians on one side of the map and 250 German with 4 Massive tanks on the other.

Unless you are playing in tournaments, I wouldn't get too hung up on points. Play the scenario rather then the points, you'll have more fun.

The armies are fairly balanced pointswise but I agree that playing historical scenarios can be much more fun

I think being able to play D-Day, Stalingrad or any or the famous battle of WWII would be amazing. I also really like the look of all the uniforms and vehicles of the armies. They captured the look perfectly

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

like you i have played 40k for years.

over the summer 40k playing kinda gound to a virtual standstill and so a joined the FOW group.

it is really cool. movement is pretty straightforward.

a word of warning though...

infantry models are pretty detailed, but due to size are really tough to paint. you can tell the difference between a M1 garand and a M1 carbine. don't obsess over getting all the detail in on your infantry. my US infantry are sprayed US armor green, get their boots and weapon stocks done in brown and weapons get metal details. cloth is given a wash of Badab black or thraka green.

Tank companies are easier to paint, less models.

cover is much harder to get in this game. if one model is exposed the entire unit is exposed.

Games move much quicker though. i got in 2 2k games in the space of 4 hours and once did a 2v2 3k game in 2.5 hours.

Early war in coming out this month so you'll have all time periods covered.

I find that certain armies tend to do better against certain matchups but again, that is only in the tourney setting. You are best off playing historical scenarios to get the full effect of the game. Otherwise, you just wrack your brain in order to make sure you have some Tiger killing weapons.
