Hey guys my first post here.
didnt know where to put this exactly so i put it here.

So my question

I have a regular space marine army and im changing to chaos but i dont want to have to start the army from scratch so im converting them to chaos space marines but im not sure exactly what to do other than taking off all imperium signs (Aquila etc).
I like the black legion colours but i wasnt sure if i could use converted marines in there, is it against the fluff or not?
As i dont know if the black legion allow renegade marines to join them and if they would have the same colours.

Abbadon accepts pretty much all Chaos-followers to the Black Legion, so you're good there.

As far making them 'Chaos'; Paint on shoulderpad black and paint an eye of Horus on it, remove or defile Imperial Acquila's, and paint some large Eight pointed stars on their armour (preferably in Yellow, as that the Black legion's icon colour)

If you have green stuff, spikes and tentacle-type things are really easy to make, actually. So then you wouldn't HAVE to wait for the Chaos bitz.

Also: Chaos marines can always use more skulls. They're a bit harder to make than spikes and tentacles, but there are pretty good guides out there on the internet.

do the previous red corsair scheme, big red crosses defacing imperial symbols

dont have any greenstuff YET gotta get me some of that never used it before.
As for the Red corsairs i dont like the colours id really prefer to be Black legion

Chaos? All you gotta do is throw some spiky gak on them, and there you go, it's Chaos. Really, paint and defilement of Imperial symbols, etc. is what will make the look. You can say that these guys are recent converts or something.

I'd recommend trimming off the molded on Imperial Insignias, skulls, and purity seals, and painting them up according to the Black Legion colour schemes in Codex: Chaos Space Marines (black undercoat, grey highlights, yellow for the Eye of Horus/Eight-Pointed Star emblem).

That's what I did with my World Eaters 5th Company, which are basically composed of Space Marine bodies with Berzerker heads because I wanted a clean tech-y look to them. It's a hassle, but worth it to me because I find all the molded on skulls and tassles and whatnot really tacky.

Ill convert what i have into black legion
so far for my space marines i have

5xDevastators
5xassault marines
15xtactical marines
1 Dread
1 predator

from now on ill buy chaos marines to save the hassle

It usually looks pretty crappy to convert Marines into Chaos Marines. Although superficially similar, there's all kinds of ornate details, industrial bits, and horns that just don't mesh. I'd rather just buy Chaos stuff, as it will look better.

I am buying chaos stuff but id rather use my space marines as weird looking chaos marines than spend the money to get pretty much the same stuff

Well, back in the last edition Chaos Coded they had some ideas of doing just that. It involved painting traitor runes over the aquillas and just crossing them out in general. Some even had chaos parts.
