I've never even looked into a Space Wolf codex, but I was looking at the wolf pack set and I was wondering, are they the standard 'tactical' marine for space wolves?

I noticed they have lightning claws, which is the main reason I'm asking

Grey Hunters are Space Wolves Tacticals.

The Wolf Pack set allows you to assemble Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, or PA Wolf Guard.

....That really makes the wolf pack a good set then! Thanks. I was confused

Yes they "Are"

TECHNICALLY you can make Wolf Guard (basically leader/veterans), Blood Claws (Scouts in Power Armor who gain an extra attack when charging), and Grey Hunters (Basically a mix of Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines. They only have special weapons instead of a heavy weapon). Maybe a Lone wolf and power armor characters

SW Pack+Assault Marine Box=Sky Claws (once again scouts in power armor)
SW Pack+Bike Box=Swift Claws (once again scouts in power armor)
SW Pack+Scout Box=SW Scouts who are elite marines
SW Pack+Devastator Box=Long Fangs

So basically, it's just a really big conversion kit?

I like space wolves!

Yes, as well as a stand-alone kit on it's own. Awesome, right?

Pretty much. which is why I love it. get a ton of bitz. easily create sternguard/vanguard if you shave off some of the SW icons. this is also why I would get a SW BF and a SM BF together. mix in the parts and you got a good SW starter force.

The wolf pack is easily one of the best box sets to come out of GW in a long time. You can get a huge variety of units out of it, and it leaves extra bits around for other conversions.

I also like how you can get a somewhat personalized approach to each individual model if your careful in your bits selection to personalize a squad or HQ type of character.

I bought the battleforce when it was released along with two of those space wolves tactical boxes and i've got so much damn stuff left over i've been giving it away to my mates so everyone can join in on the awesome conversion love that the box provides! i'd actually say good work GW!

This is correct. I can actually identify individual Blood Claws due to the range of heads you can give them, which is insane for a GW kit. Oh, and I also scraped 2 low-level characters out of the kits too. Awesome.
Now, why can't more GW kits be like this?

Me Jealous... if only chaos had chosen kits then I'd show you, space wolves, who has bitzand conversions coming out of the interdimensional rift! (Or 'Arse' as non-chaos players say...)

They should really just do this for all sm chapters ( including legions)

well they sort of do for DA and BT. Dark Angels got Ravenwing and Veterans (loads of nice bitz for them) and BT have their own conversion sprue (which HAS to be purchased seperatly though at a hefty cost)

BA has been left in the dust for non DC and SG.

Plus then the marine haters will get really angry (especially the old codex people and the guard)
