So here we are, chronicling my growth from a majorly terrible painter into a...tabletop passable one. I'm trying to figure out this forum so I'll just start you off with my terrible TERRIBLE first model. Sad thing is, I have most of the same tools I did back then...need new brushes, and need to learn better painting techniques!
Enjoy~ Automatically Appended Next Post: I hope I did that right.
Feel free to C&C, a lot. Point me to any helpful guides, too, though if it's on Dakka I've likely seen it.
Planning to buy right now:
-Brushes
-Primer
-Some more models, possibly Black Reach so I can actually play...but it's a big investment.

I cannot stress this enough. Most newbie painters don't do well at first because they try way too hard. You don't need to paint eyes to be table-top. With something like daemonettes you could get away with 3 colours. Skin, Clothing/Claws and Hair.
Two tips, are crucial for beginners. 1st, paint from "the bottom up", in terms of colour placement. If you notice, the skin is slightly recessed compared to the clothing. Paint the skin first, that way, if you get any paint on the clothing, you can paint over it more easily (it's easier to paint a more uprisen part than a recessed one).
2nd, use washes. This is an extremely common tip given to beginners, and there's a reason for that, and yet some people don't listen. Gamers have a meta. We painters do too, and it involves washes to achieve easy tabletop standards.
I won't bother mentioning the "thin your paints" tip, since it gets thrown around a lot and everyone knows by now (and yet, don't always apply it) just keep in mind that most GW, Apple Barrel and Ceramcoat paints are thin enough straight out of the bottle if you're only for a tabletop standard. The important thing with them is to let that one "straight out of the bottle" coat dry before you apply the next one.
Anyways, best of luck to you! Remember, don't try to make things too complicated or good, go for simplicity.

Mm, yes, I should not have painted the one grot's scarf first, but I really wanted to test the blue.
Any way I could make a home-made wash? I've attempted something like waterxpaintxsoap? It worked decently enough.

You could just water down you paint a lot to get something similar to a wash.

Otherwise, the guide you get with Assualt on black Reach is pretty good. Also, take Zoom's advice and paint from the bottom up, makes alot of diffrence

Well I haven't painted any since the last update, but I've been messing about with army lists and proxy games (against myself >.& gt .
Also decided on Death Skulls for the scheme.

give you a tip for painting human faces (or daemonnettes too)
base coat the face black, followed by either elf flesh or tallarn flesh. wash with ogryn flesh. highlight all raised edges with either elf flesh or tallarn (depending on which you used before) but leave the ink in the recesses. wash with light layar of gryphonne sepia. highlight the edges with a bit od bleached bone. this makes quick and easy faces that look decently.

Glory to the Twelfth! Glory to Angron!
"Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls. The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does. That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."
