Hey Dakka,
Today the gakky amp for my new electric guitar broke (im learning). In a month a friend of a friend is getting a new amp, and will have an amp MORE than suitable for my needs (he's quite serious about guitar). In the mean time, I will be trying to get my Recording Arts teacher/classmates to give me a hand with fixing it.

Here is the question: I found some ebay auctions of a 10 man tac squad (with h.bolter and melta) for $10+$1.50 shipping. however, I would need to buy stripping materials, but I already need those for models I tried failed color schemes on. I am fairly new to the hobby, and im not sure how hard it would be to cut off the guns to paint them. Should I splurge a little and buy them? They seem like a good deal, but I MIGHT want money for an amp in the future... but there is always christmas. Im leaning towards getting them to lighten my mood a bit and give me something to do. Your thoughts?

Splurge a little; that's really cheap. 10 bucks is a drop in the bucket for a good amplifier. Even so, you probably don't need to cut the guns off the models. If a Marine has a bolter over his chest you won't be able to see much of his chest anyway.

yeah i decided to go for it. i have 4 days to "persuade" my parents that its a good idea. that will probably include getting a good grade on my math test, so i decided that as a goal if I get a 90 or higher, those marines will be mine! hopefully nobody buys them first.

Also, its not so much that people would see the chest, but that I would know it wasn't painted and it would slowly eat away at my sanity until there was nothing left.

I'm going to be a bit long winded here...

See what's wrong with your amp!
I may be able to help if I knew what kind of amp it is.

You can always find good deals on 40k stuff on ebay, that deal is not unusual, so it's not like if you pass that one up another won't come along.

But down to the cooler stuff, it may only be a short in the wiring between the amp and speaker, or (depending on the type of amp) a fuse needs replacing. If it's a cheap fix then go for it, that way you won't have to keep bugging your friend to use his.

If your amp is well and truly dead, then you may as well buy some toys I guess. But if I were in that position I would want to save for a new one (which you can also find cheap on ebay but the shipping will be a little more than a box of plastic soldiers, it's a weight thing.)

(I don't know what your budget is like but I am guessing small if you are worried about $11.50)

Still maybe wait to see if you can fix your amp. Analyze your priorities:

To put it in perspective, I have lost plenty of figures over the years and after the initial irritation, gotten over it. However when I lose music gear I never forget it and always wish in retrospect that I hadn't pawned this or that piece of gear for gas money or forgot some effect pedal at a gig or whatever.

Just something to think about. But as my screen name implies, I am kind of biased.

Either solution will brighten your mood and keep you occupied, but I vote rock over geek. If you tell me what kind of amp it is and what it is acting like I might be able to diagnose what it needs. It might not be dead, and music gear is always worth saving if you can.

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.

Haha my budget isn't THAT small, just im a pretty thrifty person and don't like making snap decisions like that.

Onto the offtopic!

its an Epiphone 19 watt amp that comes with the Epiphone SG Special guitar. Heres a pic:

Im plugging my guitar in right now and OH MY GOD ITS WORKING THE EMPEROR HAS REWARDED ME.

I am happy as a fecking clam right now!!!

seems the problem yesterday was the bolt around the input was missing, so we swapped the headphone one. However, I just plugged it in to a different outlet, and it works. which is odd, since the usual outlet is fine.... and the lights still work....

I am confused. It seems magical amp pixies visited me during the night.
