I have an interesting news scoop for all you Warhammer Historical fans out there. I was at the Games Workshop "Gamesday" convention in Baltimore last weekend and I had a chance to chat with the Forgeworld chaps about the Warhammer Historical books which now fall under their domain. I wanted to know if they has brought any to the convention. They has not brought any but they were very pleased to tell me about some future releases in the works.

They said there will be a new batch of supporting books for the new Warhammer Ancient Battles 2.0 book. There will also be a World War I dogfight book; the title of that one will be "Flying Circus," or something like that. Most interesting of all, there will be a World War II book that will be called "Kampfgruppe Normandy." This is interesting because my friends and I have always wondered about what playing WWII would be like with a Warhammer 40,000 (40K) framework. Years ago there was a home grown Warhammer WWII freely available on the Internet. Our group had downloaded all of it but never got around to trying it. When it comes right down to it, there already is a 40K system for WWII out there. You all know it as Flames of War (FoW). It's no secret that the creators of FoW used to be Games Workshop employees in New Zealand. But, as we all know, FoW is a 15mm system whereas I'm sure that this new Warhammer Historical book will a 28mm approach. It will be interesting to see what this new book is like. Remember; you heard it here first!

I remember this being vaguely mentioned a while back.... at a FW Open Day perhaps ?.. seems this is still going ahead then.

If I get a chance I'll try and ask for any more info at UK GD, although the FW stand is always more like a scrum and not always terribly conducive to conversation.

Well, from back in Novermber 2009..

From all over the web..quote is here is by Mr. Osbad on Dakka

I just got hold of the new Wargames Illustrated (http://www.wargamesillustrated.net/) from my local newsagent this lunchtime and came across an interesting news item:

Apparently at the Historical Wargames group held at Warhammer World last month, Warwick Kinrade was demonstrating a new WWII game that Forgeworld are planning to release next year. Apparently it is aimed at 20mm or 15mm rather than 28mm and has a planned release date of "early on" next year. The mechanics are reported as owing nothing to Warhammer.

No comment about whether figures will accompany the rules, although it sounds unlikely looking at the comment about it being applicable for a couple of (admittedly only slightly) different scales. Could be the first fruits of Warhammer Historical's subsumation within Forgeworld? An interesting rival to FoW?

and then from end of December that year..

From the latest Warhammer Ancients' newsletter

This year we've been busy working away on a brand new edition of Warhammer Ancient Battles and we're pleased to say that it's just about finished! Weighing in at 208 pages, the new edition will be hardback and full colour throughout. The book is lavishly illustrated with fantastic colour photographs and stunning full-colour artwork. All of our existing supplements will be compatible with the new edition so make sure you’ve got the ones you need!

We'll be sending Warhammer Ancient Battles off to the printers in the New Year and when we have a confirmed delivery date, we'll make the book available for pre-order. As newsletter subscribers, we'll send you the information first and you should also keep an eye out for preview pages early in the New Year.

We also wanted to let you know about some of the other projects that we've got in the pipeline including Over the Top (a supplement to The Great War), a brand new World War II game and a 28mm Napoleonic wargame. We'll be giving you more information about each of these projects in due course but rest assured there are plenty more being worked on and there's something for everyone!

Yes this is old news, there was a demo game at a forgeworld open day as you remark. There is no significant support beyond the WAB sort of level that is known about. Rumours are out there for some supporting models or terrain from FW (mainly because so many of them are big WW2 tank nuts), but the rumours are very shakey and unlikely and I dont think we'll be seeing anything other than a book anytime soon,

I'm a little surprised this is still going on; with the FW guys busy anyway and about to get busier when they start up the WFB stuff as well, I'd kind of assumed this had been forgotten. No release date given though, so must still be quite a way off if, after the best part of a year, this is all the info they're willing to divulge.

I can see a variant of the Aeronautica Imperialis rules working for the dogfighting game.

Somewhere in south-central England.

If you want to play Warhammer WW2 in 28mm scale, just buy Flames of War, convert the scale and buy 28mm figures and 1/48 scale vehicles.

FoW isn't the same as WH40K but the overall concepts are close enough that it is no hardship to learn the rules.

I don't think 28mm is any use except for skirmishes, but it's there if people want to do it.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

28mm WWII? All I can say is, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, etc.

Damn awesome game in my opinion. Doesn't cost an arm & leg to set up either.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

Common misconception on FOW is that they used the GW employees when in fact this is only partial truth. They did because the game was designed to sell to GW, but GW early on said it would never take off and refused to buy it. The only reason I know this is I remember when it came out a friend was hired as their U.S distribution manager(later laid off) and he explained it all to me at a confrence.

REally though I don't think FW will design anything as their are already TONS of great items out there on the market.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

The sad part is, I think if they had picked it up it would have most assuredly died due to GW's inability to market its lesser, sister games.

I am very glad that FoW stayed out of GW's grasp and has prospered.

Disposable Heroes and Nuts! are also good options for 28mm WWII action.

Seconded! Witness the decline of Specialist Games in general. I mean, properly supported Epic could be a real barn-burner. Cheaper (plastic) kits, better advertising, clever scenario/battle design, and some kickin' cardstock/plastic terrain would make the whole thing go over at least as well as Space Hulk did.

I really wonder how WAB even manages to hang on after all these years.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!
