As many of you know, I'm collecting the parts and laying the plans for a big flock of rough riders. In the meantime, though, my army still has other needs. Before I get started on my riders, I'm going to sneak in a project that has a better time:points cost ratio. As such, work has already begun on a group of 6 ogryn.

I already have them basically plotted out. They are basically going to be really big guardsman, except not wearing the flak armor. Instead of a giant shotgun, they're going to have in one hand basically a big, break-open hand cannon (shoots as many little pellets in one go as a ripper gun over several shots), and a big close combat weapon in the other.

The problem (as was endlessly the case in Diablo 2) is which weapon to take. I'm down to two options: a big sword or a big hammer. On the one hand, the sword would be classy as hell. On the other hand, I feel the hammer would be more appropriate for the weapons stats and I'd get to have a OGRYN HAMMAR SQWAAAAAD!!!!!

The first two ogryn are still being scratchbuilt, so no pictures, yet, but the following gives you a feel for what they will look like.

Here are my regular dudes. Imagine this, except without the brown armor.

Or this guy, but with grey pants (yes, the ogryn will have facial hair that looks like this):

Or the guy on the left, except with a long sleeve white shirt:

Or this guy, except it will be an officer fieldblouse, rather than a winter coat:

So what say you, pistols and swords or hammer time?

Go with the sword. Class is key, even if you are a bumbling unhygenic superhuman.

Yeah. Normally I'd say Ogryns+hammers=win, but your army theme really encourages a nice sabre or cutlass. Unless your ogryns are going to be dressed like the this guy:

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

In the 41st millennium there is only gentlemanny warfare fought over who buys the gin... I can just imagine an Ork and an Imperial Guardsman slapping each other with white gloves xD

Sword! I mean its an ogryn sized blade so im pretty sure it'll have alot of force behind it (what with being mahusive n' all) and it gives the ogryn a ton of swank.

When I did my Ogryn, I stuck with the swords, I felt it added that large amount of brute force, while still seeming like it had a little bit of marital prowess without smashing someone's head in. I figure you're using the Ogres box, which is a good box to go with, but the arms are so static that it gets difficult to model, say, an Ogryn holding a giant hammer or halberd.
Best of luck, they'll look great with your army!

I'm actually scratchbuilding them.

I'm surprised at the strong showing for swords. I'd assumed that the hammer would be the better "bash'ers heads'in!" that the ogryn are so well known for.

I was assuming that my swords were going to be relatively straight and narrower, rather than like a falchion. In short, the difference between these two guys:

Sorry for the crappy second picture, but you know the character that Robert Miellet plays in 300.

... man, he'd make a good ogryn.

Here's what I did; just turn their ranged weapon into a club. Solves two problems

Although I think Hammers are better for Ogryn, I agree with the above that Swords would be a better fit for your army. Especially if they're going to be big Guardsmen.

Fun and Fluff for the Win!

i like the idea for a ogryns wielding swords but i think hammers are best because of their raw strength. pickaxes are a thing of beauty pointed at one end and sharp in the other!

Or giant bayonets on the end of the guns?

I think the biggest question is: are they improvised weapons, i.e. anything big and choppy with a handle attached (in which case the standard ogre hand weapons are the easy option, plus a few conversions), or are they standard factory-built weapons designed specifically for ogryns (in which case they'll presumably be identical - personally I'd go for giant sabres)

wait, are people saying swords would be a better fit just because of the picture I posted at the top? Usually my squads look more like this:

Although, I suppose I DO have power weapons which are swords everywhere in my army now as well.

And yeah, these are going to be crafted, rather than improvised weapons.

Thanks for all the input, guys.

If you making them look more like guardsmen just bigger, go for swords.

Swords (of some shape) do seem more IGish to me, as compared with hammers, axes, maces or whatever. The IG will want to 'civilise' the brutish Ogryns, and so equip them with up-scaled versions of normal IG equipment, if only to make human guardsmen feel less nervous when Ogryns are around

So just a heads up, I'm starting to get along with my ogryn so far, and this is what they look like as of right now:

Gotta admit, swords are starting to make a lot more sense.

Tomorrow or sunday I'm going to craft the weapons. Any other ideas that would look cool, other than just swords or hammers?

Mace! In WW1 there were trench maces as well!
http://www.fototime.com/4808C30DEF70772/orig.jpg Easy to model and easy to fall in love with its simplicity!
Go with it, or if You must have swords, then make something like a falchion!

I meant this type, not the ones google shows, those arent REAL falchions...

I like the way those orgyns are starting out! Your army is giving me a desert theme. i would give the orgyns a trench raider look. give em large canteens, ammo clips, stikk grenades and trench knives on their belts.Oh for their ripper guns are you gonna scratch bulid them?

:-) I'd go with a sturdy sword... Something like a machete or a claymore, that sort of thing... Sturdy being the key with the Str 6 on the charge, etc... That or just bayonets on the ripper guns. Keeps the "regimented" feel, and it's not like they get any bonus for additional CCW's or anything
