Can a Wolf Guard Battle Leader have Saga of the Hunter and a Thunderwolf mount? It would seem not, since the T'wolf makes him cavalry, but I've seen it in lists. Sadly, it's not in the FAQ.

No, it is not in the FAQ, because it is in the RaW.

Page 62, Thunderwolf Mounts:
... A character with a Thunderwolf Mount has the unit type of Cavalry...

Page 64, Saga of the Hunter:
Infantry Only.

Page 85, Saga of the Hunter:
May only be taken by a model in power armour that does not have a jump pack or Space Marine bike.

The very first sentence of Saga of the Hunter: "Infantry only"

Then again this is another case of GW's Poor Writing; that sentence is followed by fluff, followed by a sentence detailing the rule.

Then to muddy it up further the bullet point is copy-pasted from a unit without the TWM option, and only denies Jump-packs and Bikes.

So according to Clear RAW: yes mount and Saga of the Hunter is OK

According to RAW, if the first line of the Saga is rules: Then no it is not OK.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

"Clear RAW" is that you cannot take that saga with a thunderwolf, as youre no longer infantry, youre cavalry ....

Whether the Saga rules Begin at the beginning of the patragraph, then take a break for some fluff, then go back into rules is not necessarily Clear.

What is Clear is that saga of the Hunter Grants Outflank and the Stealth USR.

What is also Clear is that Models with bikes or Jump-packs cannot take the Saga.

Those are the only 2 Clear Rules as Written.

I do admit that it seems as though "Infantry only." is also part of the rules; but it is the only rule in any codex that is followed by fluff, that is then followed by more rules.

This goes the Same as Moonfang on Kor'Sarro Khan: first sentence tells you it is a Powersword; rules do not.
Granted they are not exactly the same; but similar enough to warrant merit.

Whats clear is that it says infantry. Take a thunderwolf and youre cavalry.

He just explained why that particular rule is not clear. Pay attention.

Seems to me:
Yes, you may take the saga (since only models who are equipped with packs or bikes are denied)
and no, it doesn't apply to models on TWM, all it does it waste points (since it applies to Infantry only, and a TWM makes you cavalry)

I don't have the codex, though, so I guess I'm just basing this off of what people have written so far.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

So, if you take a tw, you can only take "hunter" if you keep the beast on a leash and run along it (oh, but ofcourse you cant do that, so the rules are perfecly clear. Infantry only).

I think you might actually be able to take both a Thunderwolf Mount and Saga of the Hunter. Check it:

Since this question is not answered in the Space Wolves FAQ I turn to the Orks FAQ for help.

Q. If a Boyz mob exchange sluggas and choppas
with shootas, can a Nob take a power klaw or a
big choppa?

A. You may upgrade the Nob to have a big
choppa or power klaw before you choose to
upgrade the mob to have shootas, in which case
the Nob is not affected by the mob’s weapon
swap (as he no longer has a choppa to swap),
does not receive a shoota and keeps his slugga
and power klaw/big choppa instead. He is a lot
happier that way!

I don't have the codex on me, but I'm fairly positive that the Nob upgrade for the Boyz mob is after the option to replace all Sluggas & Choppas with Shootas. If that's the case, why couldn't you take Saga of the Hunter while the WGBL is still Infantry, then upgrade him with a Thunderwolf Mount after the fact? This would also explain why the Army List only stipulates you have to be in Power Armor and not on a Bike or equipped with a Jump Pack.

Full disclosure: I'll admit this is the only way I'll ever use a Thunderwolf or Saga of the Hunter so I want it to work. But at the same time I can't seem to fault my logic and my gaming group seems to agree. I wanted to see what you guys think though (first time poster, long time lurker).

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1
