Subject: 1750 Eldar All Comers List
|
 |
Deadly Dire Avenger
|
I've been mixing up my Eldar for the past couple of months. I've recently switch from mech-dar to jetseer council to hybrid list. This hybrid list just won two games against grey knights and nids.
HQ
Avatar 155
Farseer, Bike, ROWitnessing, ROWarding, Stones, Doom, Fortune, Guide, 205
Elites
Fire Dragons x 6 96
Wave Serpent, TL Cannon, stones 110
Banshees x9
Exarch, executioner, war shout, acrobatic, 176
Troops
Dire Avengers x9
Exarch, Twin catapults, Blade storm 140
Pathfinders x 5
Jebikes x 3 with 1 cannon 76
Dire Avengers x 5 60
Wave Serpent TL cannon, stones, 110
Heavy
Fire Prism, stones, holo-fields 160
Fire Prism, stones, holo-fields 160
Nightspinner, stones, holo-fields 160
TOTAL: 1728
What should I spend the last 22 points on?
I will generally deploy with the foot portion of my army pretty far up, possibly even half way. And the fire support all the way back, either straight back or on the sides. With the avatar they are all fearless all will stick. The DA will have a nice firing zone and with bladestorm can eliminate certain squads. The avatar and banshees act as assault and counter-assault when opponents/I get closer. The farseer is key, he may or may not join up with the guardian jetbikes, but he can cast 2 of 3 powers where needed do to his high mobility. (Such as first turn guide on pathfinders then zoom up for second turn guide on DA, other good combos such as doom with banshees, fortune with avatar, etc)
Advice? Tips? Guidelines?
My biggest concern is not having enough anti-mech.
Should I drop the holo-fields and get another wave serpent? Should I find a place for bright lances?
What are possible weak spots in my list?

it looks like a good start, but there are a few glaring things that I notice.
It looks like you started upgrading your farseer, and didn't stop. Never take more than 2 powers, because you can only cast 2 per turn. Its also a good idea to upgrade him to a singing spear, as he'll be riding with guardian jetbikes, and they are rubbish in close combat. I would also try to free up the points for a warlock to accompany the Guardian Jetbikes. You can equip him with a singing spear (that gives the squad 2 s9 shots against tanks) and destructer for lots of damage against infantry if you want to shoot them (you shouldn't need embolden because of the farseer's leadership)
You need more wave serpents. It looks like you are trying to run a squad of bladestorming Dire Avengers, and a Squad of Banshees on foot. This won't work. They are too expensive, and too lightly armored to slog up the field.
If you need bodies to accompany the Avatar's march, bring Harlequins for close combat (shadow seer means they can't get shot), Defenders (lots of bodies, and much needed heavy weapon support), and Wraithguard (tough as nails) are better candidates for the job.
Overall I don't think the list is awful, but it lacks synergy and has some issues with over investing in your HQ. and it sufferes because of that.
Your biggest weakeness is that you are putting expensive, lightly armored relatively short ranged troops (banshees, avengers) in the front lines without anyway of delivering them safely to their targets. Yes they are fearless, but a few auto cannons / heavy bolters / battle cannon shots and they'll be all but useless whether or not they "stick"

Have to agree with akaean, the list lacks some overall synergy and seems split focused.
Banshees and DA on foot = no go, get serpents for these or don't take them. Anything with a lot of blasts or plenty of shooty (not grey knights or nids) will make short work of those squads downing 316pts before it even sees a glimmer of battle.
Wave Serpents - Upgrade these to at LEAST Scatter Laser, drop the stones if need to make up the points. +1 shot and +12" is worth more then downgrading 1/6 damage chart result.
Banshee Warshout - Forces a morale test, in a ldr 10 world that doesn't mean much. Most things are hitting you on a 4+ and IF this actually goes off they hit you on 5+... not really worth investing in.
Pathfinders - Really don't seem to fit a role in the list
Avatar - Not sure how he will play out, there will be other priority targets, but if they focus fire on him he'll go down without fortune.
As Akaen said, look at what your farseer's role is and pick the powers accordingly. You'll obviously always want Fortune, so look at what you plan on doing with them and choose either guide or doom. That said, you really need doom for banshees but you'll want guide for the jetbikes and that is who the farseer is rolling with. I disagree with akaen though and would actually do a warlock with embolden and spear with them to have 2x s9, 3x s6, all TL from guide and you can drop ROWit since you'll have embolden backing you up. Destructor means you are getting you GJB too close for comfort to get a pretty flamer shot in and embolden and dropping the RoWit means you are saving 20pts overall.
Oh and defiantly keep holofields on, shift the points elsewhere

One thing i will say is I love to see this configuration taken for the heavy support FOC its the way I run my lists and have had nothing but success with it really rips apart hordes in addition to being able to switch over and cover gaps in anti tank, and with the addition of HF you have a AV 12 tank you are able to tank shock/ ram with late game for those last second objective grabs

Banshees x9

Troops
Dire Avengers x9
Exarch, Twin catapults, Blade storm 140
Banshees and DAs generally need transports.
But I guess you want to keep them in the Avatar's fearless bubble during advance.
I'd drop all holofields. This would give you the points for another Serpents.
Give it the girls and keep the DAs walking.

I appreciate every body's advice. However, and with no offense to anyone, you all sound like I should play mechdar.
@akean
The idea of the foot part of my army will not always be charging up into the frontlines. They can also duck into cover or stay in reserve and kite the enemy onto my side of the board, where they will most definitely die. I do realize they are lightly armored but, in those cases I would try to take out the battlecannons, etc first.
@Bluedagger
I'll try the scatter lasers. Do you think the AP6/AP5 difference is worth even talking about?
@Both
I disagree about my HQ farseer. He is obviously expensive, but I believe his setup has always made his points back and that all wargear he has is worth it. I think he is extremely effective in changing the tide of battle where needed.
And for now I will be keeping the holofields unless I realize I REALLY need more WS.

I stand by what I said earlier you don't need to run a full mech eldar, but if you plan on having foot elements, you should leave the banshees and dire avengers out. I say this because Banshees without a transport are hopelessly inferior to Harlequins, Harlequins with a shadow seer cannot be shot from long range, they have as many attacks on the charge as striking scorpions, at higher weapon skill and initiative, and the same strength (furious charge). They have hit and run, and their kisses give them rending, which lets you engage heavy infantry effectively as well. On foot, Harlies will out preform Banshees any day of the week. Banshees are taken because Harlequins cannot take a dedicated transport, its as simple as that. Dire Avengers are a bit trickier, generally while they *can* do stuff on foot, they are probably the worst Eldar troop on the ground. Since you already have guardian jetbikes and rangers, I would emphasize that you either take more of those, or get some Defenders. Guardian Defenders can out perform Avengers on foot because of the heavy weapon, and cheapness of bodies to take advantage of the fearless aura. They both wearing paper mache, at least you don't feel as bad when the Guardians get pasted, the conceal warlock that they can take also ensures they get "a" saving throw against most enemy guns- including heavy bolters, auto cannons, etc. Also if they are "ducking in cover" or "kiting the enemy onto your side of the board" Defenders will do this better as well. Avengers only have 18 inch range, while if you are playing defensively with Defenders, the heavy weapons lets you reach out and touch things, maybe get a lucky krack missile shot against a rhino, or show some IG veterans that our plasma missiles are ap4. Avengers on the other hand, will just sit there and smile until something walks up to them. Finally, I still think you should give your Guardian Jetbikes a warlock with a singing spear and embolden/destructor, and make them into a body guard for your Farseer. I honestly don't see how a farseer by herself isn't getting instagibbed. Anything strength 6+ will kill her with one failed save, and if she is fortuning the avatar... *poof*. By herself, she won't last past turn 2 against a competent opponent.

Basically agree with the above advice: farseer is overupgraded, banshees and dire avengers on foot are a waste. I think overall you either need more vehicles to make the entire army mobile (except the pathfinders) or you need to take a different selection of infantry. Heavy support and the fire dragons are good starting points though!
