Subject: Can SM win at 200 points?
|

Ancient Ultramarine Venerable Dreadnought

I'm entering a small kill team tourney, and I only play space marines.
Rules are simply 200 points, no SC or heavy support.
I've been checking out dakka as I try to make a team, but it just sounds like its gonna be a rapefest!
Cheap models win at this level surely? I've seen guys lists an its stuff like.. mobs of boys or nids or gangs of guard and I can't help but think SM have no chance at this level.
Anyone got a good idea for a list? All I can think of is 5 terminators!

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels. |

I'll verify that sternguard are pretty tough at kill team, especially with 4 combis (plas or flamer), a heavy bolter and a missile launcher (or two HB's). There's enough variety in there that you can take on most forces.
Three landspeeders is pretty rocking too, but our version of kill team doesn't allow vehicles. If it did, an ironclad with hurricane bolter, heavy flamer, DCCW (or chainfist), hunter-killer missiles in a drop pod is a pretty tough opponent as well.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

I'm a fairly big fan of bikes at this level.
Hard to kill, very killy themselves. Yeah, you won't be rockin' 30 boyz, but you would be able to outmaneuver them as well as, from a model to model standpoint, out shoot, out assault, and out survive them.

Scouts. Scout bikers, Scout Snipers, just go crazy with Scouts. Hey, they may not be a powerful as a normal SM, but if tou make them snipers, you can pin a army of Orks, 2's to hit, and still a 4 plus save!

Pinning does absolutely bump-all in Killteam:
1. Each model is it's own unit
2. You must cause a wound for pinning weapons to require a Ld test
3. Most models in Killteam only have 1 wound anyway
Bikes are pretty nice, but if the game is played properly, there's 50% terrain/cover on the table instead of the standard 25%, making maneuvering the bikes a little tricky. Those dangerous terrain test build up quickly, so be careful.
I've found some of the best combos to be Sternguard w/ combis & HB's/ ML's, Terminator Squad, Harlequins, Striking Scorpions with Pathfinders, Immortals with Scarabs, Kroot squad w/ shifter (?) and Fire warriors, Tau Stealth Suit team, and IG Infantry squad.
We had a Killteam tourney with the new rules, with the no vehicles provision added to make things a little more balanced that was loads of fun to play. Don't forget to choose your USR's carefully. I ran a team of harlies with a Troupe Leader with PW, Deathjester, 2 fusion pistols, and kisses all around with Feel No Pain on the TL, Stealth on the DJ, and Infiltrate on one of the fusion pistolleers. Playing on a smaller board and being able to completely ignore the terrain is awesome, as is splitting up your shots on the 24" S6 cannon (with a 3+ cover save), and being close enough to eliminate one model with a S8 AP1 instagib. It doesn't do great against purely shooty armies and you rely on cover saves for a lack of decent armor, but it's a terror.

Harlequins or Sternguard then... the Harlies' kisses are rending for the AP1 and can get fusion pistols S8 AP1. Sternguard can go with combi-plas and plasmaguns or even lascannons (pricey there) and the Sergeant can get a variety of power weapons. What's best is that your plas can split fire between targets, so declare the target of the first shot, roll to hit, roll to wound - if dead, shoot another model!
