As discussed on Facebook for those invited.

1k points is fine, I just thought that 750 would have been a good start for a first tourney.
However, I know that 750 forces the elite armies to make some very difficult choices that could effectively leave them without a way of dealing with either horde or other elite armies, depending which way they go. 1k can give you a little more coverage, but it will ramp the average length of the games up a tiny bit.
If we go with the umpire idea (which I'm heavily in favour of by the way) we could also impose a time limit on the games to keep things on track. Last thing we want is to meet up and have some people invest a whole day and not get to play 'cos off two slow bastards.

Because it was a quick an easy way to avoid people clicking on the thread and asking if there was any space etc etc. Plus we needed somewhere with a better layout than facebook chat to discuss it.
As you two have shown interest though, you're both more than welcome if you can find suitable flights and accommodation

well wont have everyone playing at once, and only need umpire to keep track of time, slap wrists if people are playing slow, and to finish arguments quickly.

I'll umpire. As I said it's tough to commit so much time without the chance of having to piss off half way through. At least if I'm umpire the tourney can go on without me if that does happen.

It's gonna have to be straight knockout if we do it over a weekend so I'd suggest a cap at 8 players with the first round being a randomly determined mission etc, same for semi's except rerolling any missions types that have already been played, and the final to be the last remaining missions combination.
This is similar to what happens at the GTs, and ensures that the winning army is not only good on the field but also capable of achieving victory in all the different scenarios, which encourages (but doesn't guarantee) balanced army construction.
No-one gets a bye.
If we play with 8 players we won't even need to consider it. However, if someone drops out and we end up with say 7 players, we'll play the first three matchups and then determine who the best placed loser is. Do this by using the same system as the GTs use for tie breaking. First of all, the difference in objective points. This will be as close to fair as we can get, as everyone will have had the same scenario. It's important to use the difference and not the total victory points (as the GT would use) because otherwise losers who played horde armies and lost would likely have a higher total score if the game had been annihilate. Therefore, whoever had the smaller difference is the best ranked. In the fairly likely event that there's a tie here, then we'll go off victory points. Basically the value of the units you destroyed during the game, with the highest winning. Once best place loser is determined they get a wildcard into a playoff with the 7 player who then needs to beat them to progress. This will leave us with 4 semi finalists.
System can be adapted to accommodate most eventualities.
With an umpire to smooth gameplay over, I'd say we should go for a play time of 75 minutes. This will put pressure on people to make quick decisions whilst leaving enough time to play out a full game. However, a game should never end with someone having a turn advantage. We should be able to wrap up any final turns and boxing up models etc within 15 mins or so, I'd guess an hour and a half per game... 6 hours for quarter finals, 3 for the semi's, and however long it takes for the final. Afterall, me and whoever else will have earned the right to take as long as we wish by that point so.... ;-)
Hope it sounds okay, it's pretty basic but should get us through the day with a break for pizza.
