Hi! I am trying to make a magic-heavy list with a balance between offensive and support magic. I dont want to go BoH as players in my area find it cheesy. So here is a list that I came up with. Comments and suggestions are most welcome. Cheers!
Lords: 12%
Archmage (295pts) High Magic
[General; Lvl3; Folariath’s Robe; Seerstaff of Saphery]
Heroes: (488pts) 20%
Mage (145pts) Lore of Light
[Lvl 2; Silver Wand]
Mage (175pts) Lore of Light
[Lvl 2; Annulian Crystal]
Noble (168pts)
[BSB; Armour of Caledor; Guardian Phoenix; Great Weapon]
Core: (600pts) 25%
Lothern Sea Guard (324pts)
[23 Sea Guard; Shields; Musician; Standard Bearer; Banner of the Eternal Flame; First Among Equals]
Spearmen (276pts)
[29 Spearmen; Musician; Standard Bearer]
Special: (910pts) 37%
Sword Masters of Hoeth (320pts)
[16 Sword Masters; Full Command; Standard of Balance; Ironcurse Icon]
Phoenix Guard (380pts)
[20 Phoenix Guard; Full Command; Banner of Sorcery]
Dragon Princes of Caledor (215pts)
[5 Princes; Full Command; Banner of Ellyrion]
Rare: (100pts) 4%
Great Eagle (50pts)
Great Eagle (50pts)
Total 2,398pts

My only concern is that none of your mages have a save of any sort.
Apart from that it looks alright.

i have a Folariath’s Robe on my level 3 mage, and not enough points on the others. should i put more protection?
i was thinking of avoiding combat in general especially with anything that has a magic weapon or make them mundane with high magic so my archmage will live

Forariath's Robe only means magical attacks can strike you if i recall correctly which isn't really that impressive. Yes with 3 mages you should have solid shot at making sure your opponent doesn't get that many spells off but most mages should still have at least a ward save to help stop that potential miscast.
Avoiding combat would be pretty hard because you'll either need to stick the mages in a unit or keep them within 3" to benefit from a 'Look out Sir!' roll.
If you're looking for points maybe drop the Standard of Balance. You shouldn't have the need for the unit to be immune to psychology. Plus it's a tad over priced at 45pts.

As Jake suggested, a Ward save of some sort on your Archmage will be really beneficial even with Forliath's robe as an insurance policy against Magic Attacks and 'Loss of Control' tests.
In my experience so far, you rarely get more than 1-2 Mages being to cast anything of worth in any given Magic Phase. With 3 Mages, I think you're really diluting your Power Dice Pool too much. Granted, your personal experiences may vary, but I'd recommend dropping one of the level 2's (probably the Silver Wand Mage) and bump the Archmage up to Level 4, replacing the Seerstaff with the Silver Wand and giving him the Talisman of Preservation (my personal set up). With the way Magic selection works now, you get 5 spells with a strong likelihood of getting to specifically choose at least 1-2 of them. Would also suggest Lore of Life for the Archmage (though this is purely preference for me).
Dragon Princes - If I were going to run a min-sized unit of DPs, I would just drop the command entirely and run them as an 'expendable' shock unit. While I do like the unit, you may be better off saving the points for an extra body (total of 6) and having them run commandless around the flanks/enemy back-field.
As Jake suggested, I'd drop the Standard of Balance. Between Ld8/9 and BSB rerolls, your points would be better spent on more Swordmasters.

+1.
Though I'd say drop either drop the DP or give them a bigger unit. Yes they're expensive but if you use them in conjunction with your SM or even PG on one unit you've got a fair chance of dealing a massive amount of damage in one turn. Against steadfast units you're still going to get a little bogged down but against smaller possibily more elite units you have a fair chance of making them flee or even killing them outright.

Thanks for your comments! I agree with the standard of balance completely and will take that out.
I put an extra mage in there to have access to an annulian crystal. I feel that I cannot go without a silver wand or a seerstaff because i need specific spells to complement my army. I cannot have all with just two mages since they are all arcane items.
I chose a level 3 archmage with seerstaff and 2 level 2 mages is to get the spells that I need for flexibility. I only need flames of the phoenix, vauls unmaking and maybe shield of saphery while i need most or even all the spells from lore of light.
Should I switch the lores around and will give the silverwand to a level 4 mage and give him lore of light? This way I will have more points to give him the ward save he needs. The seerstaff can go to a level 2 mage and give him high magic? So that I still have certain access to flames of phoenix and vauls unmaking.

As I said before, a Lvl4 with the Silver Wand effectively gets to choose his spells (and gets him the option of getting that much useful 4+ Ward Save). If you _need_ specific spells to compliment your army, I would really recommend running the aforementioned lvl4 set up and give _him_ Lore of Light. It'll give you pretty much all the spells you'll want, and get you a better chance to cast everything.
Given the relative ease of casting old Army Book spells, it's better to give your Annulian Crystal Mage High Magic (gets you Drain Magic for free to boot).

@ Jin
many thanks! will do just that. and i guess i will also try to put that ward save in the archmage instead of the f robe. will try to post the revised list soon.
@ kastellan
Teclis isnt even allowed to set foot in my gaming area, everyone thinks he's just too strong especially for 8th ed. Maybe BoH but I'm looking for a non-cheese alternative, hence the thread. Automatically Appended Next Post: @ Jake
Exactly!!! )
