So as recommended by the uk based dakka users i tried using fairy power spray, it works to a certain point, but at £3 a bottle its gonna eat alot of my money, even then my part arnt fully stripped of paint.

So next thing i am trying is somethin my mother says is dettol just under a different name, so wats the ingredient that makes dettol strip paint?? (Note: is smells like dettol)

If this doesnt work then i will try nail varnish remover, then if it goes that far ill probly just import simple green or w/e its called as it seems to be "the best and safest way to strip paint"

Pretty much any acetone free nail polish remover is supposed to work well on plastics. Although i would recommend you test it on a less important model or the like.

Any brand will do mate. Just have a look in whatever supermarket you've got nearby. They'll have 'for sensitive hands' or 'acetone free' plastered on the bottle. Basically just IPA instead as the main active ingredient.

Dettol is still recommended here, and the magic ingredient is pine oil. Hence the simple green/pine-sol (or whatever they're called) fans across the pond.

For some strange unknown reason i cant seem to find the ingredients listed for the "dettol substitute" i picked up :S i tried a quck scrub, it rmoved some of the paint, but it needs to soak longer

Well the stuff should work as it has pine oil in it. not bad for £1 lol

If there's a Boots nearby, try "Sally Hansen Acetone free polish remover" - It's what I use and it works a treat (please note I've only used it on plastic minis)

I popped up a tute about striping paint with Dettol, someone asked a similar question, Dettol's got both Pine oil and Isopropyl Alcohol in it, both of these are tried and tested, plastic friendly strippers.

Er..paint strippers.

Dettol works fine with a few things to bear in mind;
1) Leave models to soak for a while, a couple of hours at least.
2) The only way I've found to get the black undercoat off is to leave it immersed in the dettol and get a toothbrush and scrub it off submerged.
3) The paint quickly mucks up the effectiveness of the dettol, so change it regularly. The rule of thumb is if you can't see through it,change it.
4) Wear rubber gloves! Undiluted dettol is not kind on the skin.

I've tried using Dettol alternatives (other brown coloured disinfectants and a third of the price) with no real success.

In my experience, it's got to be the real thing!

Just an FYI, if your planning on spending the money for imports (though Im sure youll get it sorted) buy SuperClean. Its WAY better then the simplegreen crap. And lasts a million times longer.

I've used Dettol and it works fine. I leave the minis overnight and scrub while they're still in the liquid and the paint comes off nicely. I've reused it a fair bit too and still no problems after a nice, long soak.

That's the one.

Fresh Dettol will see acrylic paint sloughing off in minutes. The Chaos Black primer is much harder to get off. It basically won't soak off, even with weeks of immersion.

You can filter the paint crud out of the Dettol and use it again.

I haven't tried Acetone Free nail polish remover. I might give it a go tonight, though. I don't really like scrubbing and scrubbing with a paintbrush and a bowl full of Dettol.

I've just had a thought, Dettol + one of those sonic jewelry cleaners, I wonder how well that'd work.

I tried acetone free nail polish remover from Boots.

I had a partially stripped Termagant, done in Dettol, and left it in the polish remover for 24 hours.

The remaining acrylic paint and most of the chaos black primer was removed, but the model was affected and became soft and rubbery.

I am going to try putting the model in for only two hours.

I think a two stage process, first Dettol (which is safe for plastic) then a short dip in polish remover, may work well.

Just dug out my predator hull out of the dettol bath, been in there for a day almost and the reults are awesome so far. Most of the paint has come off but has to go for another bath, will leave for 2days as friday is the most convenient time for me to try scrub it again.

You can leave plastic models in Dettol for weeks. I don't think it makes much different after the first few days, though.
