I've just finished my first Cadian Shock Trooper and am in need of some comments & criticism from you guys, I took my time on this, about 5 or 6 hours and I was eventually pleased with it, but after I took the photos with my camera lens I then saw the fine details, I realise I got a bit of Codex Grey on the skin, which isn't visible to the naked eye, plus other details. Please give me your comments and advice

Thanks
Nathan

I'd say to pick out some details on the gun and the helmet, also paint in the eyes and then ya got a fine tabletop mini!

Being a Cadian Shock Troop painter myself, the hardest thing is the cloth for me... Getting all those creases looking perdy and what not.

My only suggestion would be a little more highlighting on the raised areas of the cloth fo sho.

The way I do it is with Graveyard earth, badab black wash, Graveyard earth again except I drybrush that on. After that's all dried and awesome looking, I highlight with the Khaki colour.

Other than that good job dude.

Its a decent paint job. I think the overall appearance of the model would be greatly improved if you only flocked the top of the base with gravel. Also are the pants purple or are my eyes playing tricks on me? If you are a beginner, then this work is great...the painting has been done in a very neat fashion and has a clean look. From here, I would recommend experimenting with highlights on the armor now. Best of luck!

Ok thanks for the info guys, I will definitely take your pieces of advice on board, yeah the cloth I painted does look too shiny and clean. I found the face the hardest part as it's so small. Anyone have any suggestions for a good magnifying glass that really makes it close up? I have one but it's not as magnified as I'd want it to be.

Thank you so much, well I say I'm a beginner but have done painting since 1996 but off and on. I know the basics put it that way It is red, Scab Red if I am correct. I haven't got my paints with me here so can't check but pretty sure it's that one.

I notice a few mold lines on the shoulder pads and helmet. You might want to try and sand those down a bit. As for faces I find it best to paint them while they're still on the sprue. Then glue them on and paint the helmet. Makes it a lot easier. I'd also try for skin, doing a base coat of tallarn, and a light drybrush of elf flesh. Then get a real fine brush and paint the eyes black for a quick way to do eyes. For a harder way paint the pupils white and put a black dot somewhere in them. This is harder though because your guardsmen can come out looking cross-eyed . After that I wash the skin with some devlin mud and it's all done. The mud helps shadow the face and conceal the eyes a bit better. Other than that it looks pretty good. Interesting color scheme. But yeah, I agree with the others you may want to drybrush a high light on those fatigues. Simply take some of the color you used, mix in a little white, get some paper towel, get some paint on the brush and whip it on the towel until it doesn't leave much behind and go to town on the fatigues. This doesn't take too much skill so don't worry about technique. The big part is limiting the amount of paint on the brush with the towel. Can't wait to see the next dude!

I hate painting the eyes, my commander has a lazy eye, and his medic is crosseyed... Makes me and my opponents laugh... UnTIL HE BURNS THEIR FACES IN WITH LASGUN FIRE!

Lol, yeah, I'm the opposite. The way some of my guardsmen hit things it wouldn't surprise me if 80% of the population in the 41st millennium are cross-eyed.

Thank you for your reply, I will take your advice on board too and remember that for next time. I like your display picture by the way I don't have Tallarn or Elf Flesh. Recently I bought Dwarf Flesh and Ogryn Flesh Wash though, will they do? I actually saw a post on this forum before I joined giving advice and someone did recommend those two that I purchased.

Hmm, never tried those colors, but you're still gonna want a highlight color to drybrush on the Dwarf flesh base. Or you could get some Tallarn Flesh and use Dwarf flesh as your highlight color. Either way the end result should be good. Ogryn wash should be good too. It's probably similar to Devlin Mud.

The highlighting (or whatever you did) on the helmet crest and armour is top notch well done. Don't be afraid to attempt highlighting like this on the cloth areas, it looks ace trust me. As currently the wash on the red cloth doesnt look great... For the face pick out the cheekbones, nose and lower lip with a lighter shade of the fleshtone and that way you wont need to do eyes, as it suggests shadow..

The main issue to me is the gravel. Don't coat the sides of the base, leave them bare plastic, and paint them a solid colour (either the base colour you use for the base, or black). It'll make the base look much better.

Nice paint job. The camera's a critic.
