It's your hobby, do what you want. If you enjoy doing it, and are happy with the end result, that will tell you if it was worth it.

I'd shy away from using foamboard for your mini's bases, but the rest should be fine, if you want that.

I've personally thought that people who do lava bases fundamentally fail to understand one of the core properties of lava...

The styrofoam/foamboard was the major part of the base tbh, it gives a little elevation for the mini.

Im intruged by what you mean when you say "fail to understand one of the core properties of lava".

it's...

HOT!!!!!!

Magma is 1300 °C (or 2400 °F). You're telling me that someone can stand nearly on top of that without instantly bursting into flames?

And foam core board is fragile, and it's difficult to get glued stuff to stay stuck to it without just ripping off. Notice how the trees are glued down onto real bases?

One of my tables is in there and I plan on basing one of my armies accordingly. I bought some cork though so that all the lava will be very low compared to where the miniatures are.

I see what you mean, the board iv found is 5mm so wont be right next to the lava, and i probly wont glue the mini onto the base but pin the feet to the foam.

Use cork instead of styrofoam. It'll be less fragile.

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

If you could pull it off, hell yes it would be worth it, especially if you mount an army on them that contrasts well with lava (not talking about BA's or CSM's). I think it would be incredibly difficult however to scale this down to a base if your planning to use the exact same technique.
