Three months after its theatrical release, Robert Rodriguez’s Machete continues to stir up controversy. Following up its blood-soaked, tongue-in-cheek entry in the national immigration debate, the film has belatedly come under the scrutiny of the Texas Film Commission, which denied Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios an estimated $1.75 million in tax incentives for what the commission views as Machete’s negative portrayal of the Lone Star State and its citizens. Aside from the implications this has for filmmakers planning to shoot in Texas if the film commission continues following its guidelines to the letter, it might as well retroactively deny the incentives granted to other recent, local productions, including:

• The Coen Brothers’ True Grit remake, for implying that Matt Damon’s Texas Ranger La Boeuf would pursue a murder suspect for reasons of personal glory and monetary compensation, rather than a sense of duty.

• Friday Night Lights, because boy, does that show ever make life in a small Texas town seem depressing.

• Lone Star, due to its portrayal of Texas oil men as con artists living double lives and attempting to right their past wrongs by entering into a lives of bigamy.

• The Good Guys, for making Dallas police look like bumbling wannabe action heroes.

• My Generation, for just being terrible, and thereby staining both Austin and the state of Texas.

Why wait so long? Why would anyone ever want to say anything negative about the awesome Danny Trejo? Oh, Texas, you so silly.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Why would anyone post anything about Texas unless it is Frazz bait? Outside of that, Texas is hardly worth mentioning.

Frazz bait aside,I just don't understand the "controversy" behind this film, sure it's theme centers around some "hot button" issues...but still...it's only a movie.

The movie was funny and texas is a hole that should be made fun of. It makes sense that they would react to squelch criticism, they want to secede from america to form a totalitarian immigrant slave state lorded over by a militant junta of oil barrons after all.

Texas is silly to the nth power!

Its amazing that Texans would rather have someone exaggerate and present a psuedo-depiction of small town Texas life rather than recognizing it for what it truely is...DEPRESSING! In fact its utterly depressing! They will be waiting quite awhile for anyone to come along as associate small town Texas with some euphoria of the senses....its amazing the unwarranted sense of pride Texans have about their vapid state!

These sentiments mentioned about texas are all true...the only people that like texas are texans; the only people that willingly live here are the texans who have never traveled beyond Oklahoma, everyone else just wishes the state would get over itself and secede from the US!

Yeah, the spellcheck recognized the name "Barron" and I didn't notice i put in two R's. Whatever, texas will just change the word anyway, they don't need to listen to elitest liberal dictionaries.

Yea thats what all the Californians say that have moved to Austin and the yankees coming down to Houston and Dallas. Then the inevitable question comes (the same one you'll find Oregonians often ask) "so why are you here then?"

Honestly I was more upset that the final battle was so slapped together. Cholos bouncing in tricked out rides made for a hilarious build up, which Rodriguez ruined with a poorly directed climax.

Otherwise it was a pretty good film.

Oh, and haters gonna hate and all that jazz.

Yeah, God forbid someone complains about the characteristics of of their place of residence. Clearly people who were born in any given location never do that.

I mean, its not as if moving is expensive, or that its relatively difficult to job search remotely. That could never be the case.

To be fair, a depiction of small town Texas life as depressing is probably just about as spot on and correct as a depiction of small-town-damn-near-anywhere life. Hell, I lived in the bland and desolate wastes of Ohio for a couple of years and can't exactly feel superior. Granted they didn't have the Tixas axsaint, but I can't say I felt much light of culture and progressive thinking under which to bask there in Northern Ohio either. There were a lot of hicks, racist good ol boys, and country music everywhere and Ohio is considered a 'northern' state of the midwest, so lets not be too tough on the Lone Star, they're no worse than any other bunch of self-congratulating small town hicks in any other state. But, Tixas did apologize for giving us the other G Dub, and Austin is actually a really cool town, NASA likes Tixas, and lets be honest, would you rather have the state full of gun-happy freedom fanatics on your team or against you?

I'm surprised that Texas has any state sponsorship of film making. Surely the arts should stand on their own feet not depend on public subsidy.

Just to balance things, what films are there that depict Texas as being an awesome place? Is "No Country For Old Men" in Texas?

Well thats actually a big part of the issue. They took state money to make a borderline racist film, by a millionaire who needs no support.

Some people actually think Perry is a conservative.
But he does know which side of the bread is buttered on when it comes to the 2nd amendment. Plus the Democrats keep running fungus among us.

So if someone comes into your home and begins to complain about how hot you keep your air or how you have decorated it...that's ok in your book? And actually I was raised in Florida and I learned to deal with the heat. I never made comments like.."I can't stand this heat", It's way to hot down here, I can't wait to get out of here" I.E. Basically being insulting.

Small towns in Texas is no worse than any other small town. I've been to small town Iowa, small town Alabama, small town Louisiana, small town Arkansas, small town Missouri, small town Wales, small town England, and small town France.

You got red necks, hicks, hill billies, drunks, jackasses, jerks, good-for-nuthins, dissatisfied, and pot heads in all of these places.

Did someone from Washington single out Texas as being a depressing place to live? Didn't Seattle give the world grunge music? That's just emo set to guitar, right?

A house isn't comparable to a state, or region as there is a far lower chance that the person is there by compulsion.

Not everyone moves because they want to do so and, even if they do, then there is no guarantee that said desire was predicated on climate or aesthetics. Often times those are merely tolerated

But, in any case, yeah that's perfectly fine. Anyone can complain about whatever they want. It doesn't bother me.

Wait, are we now so sensitive that even commenting on the weather is insulting to people? Really? I mean, I didn't realize that it was insulting to express an opinion of dislike towards something it isn't owned, or produced by people.

I've lived in the upper Midwest for the majority of my life, and it gets damn cold. Cold enough for people to comment on how cold it is and how much they don't like the fact that its so cold. Its not a big deal, because it really was uncomfortably cold, which is why everyone had layers of clothing on.

Honestly, I don't buy the idea that you've never complained about the heat. It seems more likely to me that you're just extremely sensitive.

I agree with everything this man said...

except for the bit about Seattle. Seattle didn't invent 'grunge' it just got marketted there. Anyway I think the difference between Grunge and Emo is how much time the dude spends in front of a mirror.

Uhh It's not because they "just complained about the weather" It's the insinuation that where they came from was better, and where I come from is inferior, because in their opinion the weather where they came from was better.

If you look at what I posted, I didn't say that they just said "it's hot"... No, I said.... they said.."I can't stand THIS heat" it's way to hot down HERE", I can't wait to get out of THIS place"

You see the difference between just saying "It's hot". There is a respect difference In my opinion. That is why I brought up the house comparison.
