Subject: Question about vehicles...

Hello!
I am trying to come back into the hobby and the last time I played was towards the mid point of 3rd edition. I am just wondering how necessary taking vehicles are? I have the new rulebook and am slowling going through it, hard to learn just by reading though. So are they an absolute must take? I was thinking about trying to field an all marine list.
At this point I am playing more for fun than competition, but ultimately want to play in tournaments.
SO, mighty Dakka-ites, in your opinions is it better to field vehicles?

Transports are very important, they not only provide additional speed, but also protection from weapons fire, and aren't the deathtraps they were in 3E and 4E. You will almost always want transports for the dudes that can take them.
Gun tanks are less important, infantry equivalents often can provide the same thing depending on the army. You'll very rarely see Predators for example in an SW army with Long Fangs in the mix.
Marines can get away with not fielding *too* many tanks, but it never hurts to have too many. Armies like IG however you'll see fielding up to 17 independent AV12 vehicles with close to a hundred infantry in a 2000pt game.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.
New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

Ok, I am leaning towards space wolves because that is what I started out with when I started 40k, but dont think ill take long fangs. might as well go full mech if i m gonna take transports. My only other question, i think/hope, is would you recommend a full mech force or a partly mech force?
I don't like being a noob again.

Dont listen to the whole mech rules thing too much, its become the standard in 5th ed Im afraid but you can play perfectly well with other types of lists.
Assuming you arent truely hardcore or playing tourneys 100% of the time and you have a nice local gaming group, come up with a theme for your army, then build it with units that compliment that theme/each other and have fun.
I'd suggest having a browse on here for peoples builds/ideas for SWs, I think its a bit simplistic (and probably a nasty waste of money) to build your army around "to mech or not to mech".

The ability to move around quickly is really important. Vehicles is the obvious way to do this.
On the other hand, jump-packs, bikes, wolves, etc all give movement bonuses so you don't have to go all vehicles.
The biggest problem with going semi-mech is that it offers both vehicles and infantry targets for your opponent's weapons. If you have only vehicles or only non-vehicles then he can't use all his weapons to full effect.

Mech isn't required.
having weapons to kill Mech, however, is.
Most armies will be bring their troops to the battlefield in tons of Metal Boxs.
you need weapons that can reliably pop AV10-12. Str7-9 is good.
Melta is also the name of the game. SW can take a bunch of Melta weapons in GH and BC packs.
What your exact level of meching is is really up to you. as long as your army has the tools it needs to, Pop transports, Pop Land Raiders, and kill the squishy guys inside you will do fine.
