Hi all,

I am a new 40k player who is playing Dark Eldar. I recently bought 20 Hellions, and in the joy of putting them together, glued a fair number to their flying stands already. However, I forgot about needing to spray paint them for an undercoat. I would prefer not to spray the flying stands if possible. So my question is, is there a way to paint the undercoat on? I was going to attempt to use spray paint, spray a glob of paint onto a wet pallet, then speedpaint on an undercoat. Would that work?

Dunno if that would work, but you have 2 options -- buy a new set of flying stands which are pretty cheap

--or--

Do what i do on some of my models, take chaos black paint, put it on a piece of tile (i have found mixing paints, and with water on tile works great, props to my brother) and mix it with water. This will water it down allowing it to go on as more of as undercoat, spreads easy, easy to control, and dries well. Hope this helps

Take some blue masking tape, it's the kind you would use to mask off areas before painting. It's low tack so it will come off easily. Simply wrap it around the stand. You'll need to spray the base anyways.

Or you could just tape the flying stands prior to spraying.

You could try painting it on. The foundation paints make ok undercoats if you can't spray.

Ifurita is beating me to the punch everywhere I look!

As suggested, If the flying stands are glued on, tape off the uprights.

For the money you've already spent, I think you'd be silly not to use a proper sprayed undercoat and basecoat.

You can buy paint on undercoat and the foundation paints don't necessarily need an undercoat anyway.

What you shouldn't do is spray into a container than try to paint the wet sprayed paint.

If I am not in my room, is it still my room?

Just use Chaos Black, straight from the pot. Apply with a relatively soft brush, and make sure you keep the bristles moist. Afterwards, use Badab Black to smooth over the surfaces, and ensure a matte finish.

(I do the above when out of Spray Primer...)

Thanks for the suggestions guys

Its roughly 15 degrees outside, so spraying isn't a really good option. I'll attempt to tape off the base as suggested and see if i can't get a good even spray coat down in the garage. Thnanks again

Agreed. Also, it would drive me nuts to have to brush on primer for all of those models

The garage is going to be your best bet. How about this:

1. Get the models set up on a tray or something. Make sure it's protected. Leave it inside the house until the last minute.

2. Keep the spray paint indoors also.

3. Protect the area where you're going to spray in the garage with newspaper, old sheet, etc.

4. Take models and spray to garage at last possible moment.

5. Spray them, then get them (and the spray) back inside promptly.

6. Repeat cycle if you have more models to do.

Actualy there is little need for buying blue masking tape If you have some post it notes to hand simply wrap the postit around the top of your flying base as tightly as you possibly can then using a small piece of tape to hold it in place spray you models in a well ventilated area once dry remove postit and re-wrap it around the base and repeat.
