Quick question since I've never bought from FW before, but do the models come with their rules? I have a bad feeling the answer is "no, go buy a crazy expensive IA book", but I thought I'd ask anyway.

My friend is buying his brother a Blood Slaughterer Impaler for xmas and Army Builder has all the basic rules but for the Impaler cannon it says "see IA7." Now I recognize that one should own the codex for one's army, but it seems ridiculous to expect someone to buy an entire IA book just to be able to play with a single model they bought to supplement their regular army.

Unfortunately, the rules are only available in the corresponding IA book. They do not come on a separate datasheet.

If you're lucky, newer models usually have "experimental" rules that are posted online. These usually remain valid until they are either taken down or published in the next IA book.

York/London(for weekends) oh for the glory of the british rail industry

why is it crazy? you are buying a supplement to a game therefor you have to get the supplement rules too.

to be honest its more ridiculous to expect that someone would be willing to pay a massive mark up for a forgeworld model

Relictors: 1500pts

its safe to say that relictors are the greatest army a man , nay human can own.

Nuts!

That's unfortunately what I figured would be the case.

The actual rules can also be found in IA Apocalypse II which is at least a bit cheaper than the whole campaign books. It also contains most of the newer FW 40k models / rules.

Night Lords: 5500 points / 1750 points painted
Orks: 1250 points / 300 points painted
Orcs & Goblins: 6000 points / 2500 points painted
Tomb Kings: 3000 points / 1500 points painted

I say ridiculous because with a codex the assumption is that you will be collecting many models from the army to actually play. Whereas it is entirely possible to use a single FW model a supplement to your existing army, so why should one have to pay for a massive book of rules and fluff for many other models you never have any intention of using?

Ah, thanks, Ashrag, that is a little better.

Forge World is the icing on the cake. It's not necessary (and sometimes downright broken) to use in a game. It's comparable to basic groceries and a high class, gourmet restaurant. You'll eat and be full with both, but which one will drain your wallet?

1.) Some models can be used "counting as" something in the Codex.
2.) Many models get a free pdf with "experimantal rules" when released, taken off the website when the appropriate book is released.
3.) If you have an army covered in an Imperial Armour bokk, this is a priviledge, not a burden. If you can afford it, you won't regret buying it.

I think some forge world models are aesthetically better, the only ones that I would think of using with their own rules would be the titans. But even with those GW included rules for them in the Apoc books.

The Forge WOrld books are actually a decent read to be hononest. I enjoyed them, and I think they were worth the money I shelled out for them. That being said, certain things will have their rules for free. The IA1 units have their rules available for free for example, and can be downloaded along with the Armored Battlegroup Army List.

Edit.

IA Apoc 1 & 2 have the rules for almost everything and are much cheaper than the normal IA books.

Also, all of the older guard, marine and inquistion units are downloadable - Chris has posted the IA1update link, there's also IA2update available.

Depends what country. You know it's actually cheaper to buy a Forgeworld Hive Tyrant in Australia than a GW Hive Tyrant? Fun stuff.

Also, you're spending lots of money on toy soldiers. If somsone sells better looking toy soldiers, whats the harm in spending a bit more for better looking stuff?

Some rules sets as said are available for free on their site. But the up to date/proper stuff is in the corresponding imperial armour book. You can always field these items as counts as nearest similar unit in a codex as well.

In the case of the Blood Slaughterer with Impaler, the rules in IA7 are out of date and you want the IA Apoc book anyway (they changed the rules for hitting with it IIRC because they realised that using it at BS1 sucked!)
