Subject: Noob Question about model rules

40k has always interested me, but I never had the money growing up to get into it. About a year ago I realized that I have to income to start and picked up the assault on black reach set. I glued all of the orks (which I have choose to play) in a fashion so that they looked mean and orky, each having a gun and a choppa.
Fast forward a year and I have the rule book, ork codex, and A gaming group. Now that I'm building out a Kan wall list I realized that taking along shootas means that they can not carry a choppa. My buddies said it is fine that my models are all armed with choppas, so long as I declare that they are shoota boys when the game starts. I am worried that this may not fly in tourney play.
I have two boxes of boyz to assemble and needed to know for sure if it really matters if a choppa is glued on or not. Also, I don't really want to retrofit my currently assembled boyz to remove the choppas since I have so much to assemble and paint already.
Thanks so much, and I apologize if this has been posted before, I searched but maybe I searched the wrong thing.

You are going to need lots of boyz at 2000pts with Kan Wall thats 90-120 boyz. Having one unit of Choppa instead of Shoota isn't bad, they are the ones you charge into Elite units and destroy with 60+ attacks, even TSM should fear that. So just build the rest as Shoota, count as is good and all, but feilding/seeing a army built with all there equipment is really cool.

Thanks for the prompt reply. For now I'm shooting for a 750-1000 point army. I have two boxes of boyz and will just kit them out as shootas, and I guess if I just need to, it won't matter much if I declare the previously assembled ones with choppas as shootas as well.

you can always magnetize their arms, adding ~1USD to each model but giving yourself the option to swap out which weapons they have.

Most Tournaments, unless specifically stated, tend to expect you to adhere to WYSIWYG rules. Magnetization is probably the best route to go, although I would just take the opportunity to collect twice as many Boyz!

I don't see the problem with choppa boyz. For years i had never even considered the merits of shoota boyz and still come out slaughtering people when i hit CC. Don't worry man, keep the choppas unless you really desperately think shootas are more conducive to your strategy. I suppose hiding behind a bunch of kans does require a bit more range.. but you're an ork.. you should be getting into CC.

Shoota Boyz are much better than they seem. For their point cost they put out a hell of a lot of S4 shots. They're also Assault Weapons so you can still charge in after you shoot (and the base Ork Stat is pretty impressive for a charge anyways). Key is though, you HAVE to run masses of them to get any effect out of them. a Squad of 10 or 20 wont do much more than kill two guardsmen or scratch a marine's power armor paintjob (I'm exaggerating here, but generally this will happen outside of mathhammer).

Compromise.
Have them wielding choppas in one hand and shootas in the other.
If you want shoota models, point out that the models are holding shootas. If you want slugga/choppas, point out that they're holding the guns in one hand and a choppa in the other.
This does not work well, though, if you have shoota AND slugga units in the same army. : )
