At this point, everyone should be aware that GW has officially announced Grey Knights for April. Everyone has their own reactions to this news. I noticed the following in the newsletter/announcement:

As the Emperor prepared for his final confrontation with the traitor Horus, he granted one final gift to Mankind, a safeguard and protection against the horrors of the Warp - the Grey Knights. A brotherhood of warriors as elite as they are secretive, the Grey Knights are a shining line of silvered steel that stands between humanity and the Daemons of Chaos.

Emphasis is my own. Is this new and/or significant? To my knowledge, the origins of the Grey Knights have always been shrouded in mystery. If this snippet is to be believed, can we now more precisely pinpoint the date of their founding? Is there anything else we can extrapolate from that information?

There are apparently some hints in Flight of the Eisenstien and the audio book that was released about loyalist marines from the Legions that went traitor being the core of the GKs.

I still haven't finished my HH stuff yet so....

I just finished reading flight of the Eisenstein, and would have to say that....
Spoiler:
The loyalist traitors are the start of the inquisition, not the grey knights

At least that is what i took from it.

I believe wolfshadow may be correct. If they just come out and say it though it will sour things a bit.

Codex: Daemonhunters p.6:

"Legend tells that it was around the time of Second Founding that the Emperor ordered the creation of this secret Chapter of Space Marines. The fragile Imperium had only just survived the galactic civil war of the Horus Heresy"

If my understanding is correct, the 2nd Founding was after the heresy, after Horus had been defeated. "Around the time of the second founding" could be considered to be before the Emperor's final confrontation with Horus. Perhaps the Emperor put the put the plans for the GK into motion, but they weren't realized until after the Heresy ended?

While I doubt we'll see any real confirmation one way or the other until the leaks and pdfs start bouncing around about brand new fluff, the timing of the creation of the GK overall has at least been strongly implied as near the end of the Heresy. Another point is that the new Dex's fluff is probably written as 'present/M41' in-universe, so they will probably just keep on fudging things.

@ SonofTerra:
Spoiler:
You make a good point, but a good question is how the two will be related once the new fluff is revealed. Thev've always been linked but now GW might draw a new set of lines (or just re-perforate 'em).

My thoughts... but dont want to ruin "Oath of Moment" for anyone.

Spoiler:
If you have heard the "Oath of Moment" it sounds to me like Garro is the first Grey Knight. But according to the book, if he is taking recruits from the different chapters, then the Geneseed for the Grey Knights comes from (possibly) ALL the chapters? Interesting.

Yeah the 3 loyalists at the end of flight of the eisenstien, Garro, Qurze and the Sister of Silence person started the inquisition.
Each represented one of the 3 sections, from what I can remember
SoS = WH - ordo hereticus
Qurze = Deathwatch - ordo xenos
Garro = GK - ordo malleus

I don't think that the current grey knights have the same gene seed as Garro, just that he founded the organisation

It is at least true that, at the end of Eisenstien, Malcador announces that the Imperium is in need of people with 'inquisitive minds' or similar. However, there's nothing that suggests that each of the three is responsible for one of the current branches of the Inquisition. The Ordo Hereticus wasn't even formed until M36, as a direct response to Vandire's Reign of Blood and the Age of Apostasy.

I believe it was hinted that it was Gene-Seed from the Emperor.

No its not specific but the regent of terra requests that they create an organisation to deal with the treat of the heretic the alien and the deamon, based on that and what the main ordo forces are its fairly obvious. Hereticus was formed later but the sisters of silence were an anti psyker force during the great crusade so I presume that continued up until they were formally changed in to the SoB

I agree, they are charged with that. I just never imagined that the point was to say "and YOUR job is the daemon, Garro, and YOUR job is the alien, Qruze....". They were offered the chance to combat those forces, but they weren't specifically singled out.

I'm not sure if you're implying a link between the SoS and the Sob, but as far as we're aware, the Sisters of Silence still exist. There is no fluff that says they were officially disbanded. There is also no link anywhere between the Sisters of Silence and the Sisters of Battle. Completely different organisations, from completely different branches of the Imperium. They just happen to both be female, and have roughly the same mission (though they approach it from completely different angles).

Sisters of Silence still exist and are no way related to SoB. Just think what would happen to the Ordo Heriticus inquisitors in forces with Sisters of Silence and the SoB use warp powers themselves in the form of faith points, so they are not the same.

Possible new fluff is the only way forwards in the new Codex. The old one had very little. But I should expect some more Horus stories and their founding. Plus some exciting battles that maybe aren't just against Chaos?
