Subject: 1500 Point Missle Launcher Spam (Space Wolves - 25 ML Shots)

Now that I've purchased all the Necrons I need for a while I am looking at doing something a bit more competitive for tournaments. I won't play this too often as Necrons will always be what I want to play but when it comes down to playing for large amounts of store credit at $20 an entry a few times a month I don't want to have an army that is so disadvantaged.
I haven't had too much time to sit down with the codex so I am still a little fuzzy on the whole "Space Wolf weapon diversity" thing.
HQ: - 395 Points
Logan Grimnar
Rune Priest (Terminator Armor, JotWW, Living Lightning)
Troops: - 690 Points
Wolf Guard Pack x5 (5 Terminator Armor, 1 CML) - Drop Pod
Wolf Guard Pack x5 (5 Terminator Armor, 1 CML) - Drop Pod
Wolf Guard Pack x5 (5 Terminator Armor, 1 CML) - Drop Pod
Heavy Support: - 375 Points
Long Fangs x5 (1 SL with Meltagun, Missle Launcher x4)
Long Fangs x5 (1 SL with Meltagun, Missle Launcher x4)
Long Fangs x5 (1 SL with Meltagun, Missle Launcher x4)
That puts me at 1460. I'm not sure if those Drop Pods are the best options. But being able to drop three scoring units in TDA right where you need them sounds nice.
I know it's a very low model count but 17/32 models are in TDA and it can put out a boatload of missle launcher shots per turn.

If your not taking CC squads, or combi-plasma, I would keep the Wolf Guard on foot....
So that would save you 105 points, maybe drop the SL melta guns, saving you another 15 points, giving you 180 points spare...
I saw a list online, well a partial list (i think its from the loganwing guide on B&C) that had one 10 man squad, and 2 5 man squad (4 CML), Logan and a rune priest, which gives you options. I think even just a power fist in each wolf guard squad helps, maybe a SS as well....
Are you building this army completely from scratch? If you are, maybe the 20 foot Wolf Guard, accompanied by Dreads maybe? might be a good option....(although 3 squads of Long Fangs are nice.....)

Loganwing works best as a fully foot missile machine, keep those WG squads 5 man, 1 of them with CML, they dont all need TDA. Drop pods arent needed either, as you can reach out 54" with your 2 kraks anyway.
5 WG, 1 w/ CML is 135pts
Max long fangs = 420
Logan 275
5 squads of those 5 man WG is 675, this puts you at 1370, leaving 130pts for upgrades and wiggling. Maybe combine 2 WG squads together so Logan can hang with them and hand out preferred enemy to more guys.

Sure, but you have far more of them, and the main point is that you gain more firepower, which is what Loganwing is all about, cheap guys pumping out gakloads of krak missiles. Besides, you'll be hanging around at ~48", and the only weapons that have that kind of range are one shot tank hunting weapons like lascannons or ML's, which arent too efficient at killing marines in cover. You'd be surprised how hard it is to kill 5 marines in cover from >24" away. Its a fething pain in the ass

I toyed around with the idea of only a single terminator armor in each Wolf Guard squad - my problem with it is the expense at this point. I just dropped $600 on Necrons (in anticipation that they won't be as tough someday to win with). I'll have to analyze the cost and see. I do have a vanilla Tactical Squad and the Black Reach Terminators that may be up for converting.
So how is this compared to before?
HQ: - 405 Points
Logan Grimnar
Rune Priest (Terminator Armor, Living Lightning, JotWW, Chooser of the Slain)
Troops: - 675 Points
Wolf Guard Pack x5 (1 Terminator Armor with CML)
Wolf Guard Pack x5 (1 Terminator Armor with CML)
Wolf Guard Pack x5 (1 Terminator Armor with CML)
Wolf Guard Pack x5 (1 Terminator Armor with CML)
Wolf Guard Pack x5 (1 Terminator Armor with CML)
Heavy Support: - 420 Points
Long Fangs x6 (5 ML)
Long Fangs x6 (5 ML)
Long Fangs x6 (5 ML)
Puts me at 1490 Points total. Boatloads of ML shots per turn (best case scenario 25 shots). Weaker units as a whole but a lot of them. Purchasing the army will be quite a bit more expensive I am assuming. I don't see any Long Fang kits so it'd be buy Devastators and extra ML bits, probably need about two generic Space Wolves troop boxes (those sound like they give tons of extra bits to add to Devastators to make it feel more SW-ish), and the HQs. Looks like before buying the ML parts it'd be around $301 full price. Not bad at all and it sounds cheesy as all get out.
My only problem I see is where to expand after 1500 points? If they start running larger scale tournaments what do I add for 1750-1850? I'd never take it as high as 2k (as I'm still looking to get all my Necron purchases done before the new Codex hits - I still have about $3000 worth to buy, ugh).

Problem i see with using Assault on Black reach Tac marines is they aren't space wolves at all, and harder to convert......
That list certainly has lots of ML
But if your looking for a cheaper version, just use Terminators.....

Kidding I hope? I read somewhere about space wolves being very proud of their diversity and unique equipment from one guy to the next. In a list as spamtasticly uniform as this I doubt if the space-wolf rebel image is going to be tarnished any more just by lacking some pelts on the models.
That second list looks disgustingly good, and, as you said, cheesy as hell. But hey man, if that's what you're going for, don't expect any tournament points for army composition, just the pure unmitigated ass-beating you will be dishing out.

The tournaments I'd even bother entering it in would all be a local shop. I may get beat the hell out of for such a stupid list but there is no composition score or anything. Just $20 entry fee and he who wins the most gets $120 store credit.
The goal would be to use it to try to win a few of those to help fund the Necrons.
Since I'm a fairly new player could anyone give me some ideas of what types of problems I could run in to? Horde armies don't seem too bad. Just switch missle types launched and pray for few scatters. Elite heavy armies seem to be just shoot Str8 at their guys. I typically will see a lot of Dual Lash but they all include 1 Sorcerer (who can be instant dead) and 1 Prince. Objective based games might be kind of rough to foot slog over there but with Grimnar giving out Relentless to a squad it may not be so bad.

Keep in mind the WG can move and fire their CML, so its pretty easy to get side shots with at least some of them on chimeras, preds, and the like. Advancing onto objectives is usually easy too, remember to try and place them as near to your board edge as possible.
I'd consider dropping the Rune Priest, sure, psy defense is great, but your army really likes to hang around at 48" at let the opponent come to you, while the RP has to be at 24" to do something. This is usually a problem.
With those 110 pts you could combine 2 of the 5 man squads together, slap on some more TDA/PF's/SS and stick Logan with that squad. Bubblewrap your whole army with that WG squad, so when your opponent wants to assault he has to go through them first, and Logan can give them preffered enemy and pop living lightning if needed. Its a surprisingly nasty CC unit for a ranged army.

When I played against this list in Ard Boyz he supplemented it with two units of TWC led by two TW Lords, to provide a HtH threat to clear off enemy objectives and push the opponent back from controlling the middle of the table.
Obviously you can't afford that much at this points value, but it might be worth your while to take a medium-small unit of TWC to provide a similar function. Or do what Jabbdo suggested. All his advice has been spot-on, except for dropping the Rune Priest. The Rune Priest is excellent; and even when he's not in range for the hood, he is in range to smack enemy vehicles with Living Lightning w/Tank Hunter.

I find that the RP is either really useful, or just a pricey autocannon, but YMMV. I usually prefer taking more WG, who will always perform regardless of opposition. Either way, its a good list.

Closer to two Autocannons, on average rolls. And functionally S8 against vehicles thanks to Logan giving the squad tank hunter.
But as you say, YMMV.
