Was pondering my Mordor army recently and, having recently purchased the Dark Marshall found a bit of a grey area concering the Spirit Grasp rule.

I mean, it's perfectly fine when it's a winged Nazgul we're talking about but how exactly does it shape up when you got a Ringwraith that has joined a unit. Guess it could go 1 of 3 ways.
1. The rule being completely negated and the Nazgul, being an epic hero just acting like one of the unit but with the higher fight value.
2. Proportioning the attacks up - e.g. half Spirit grasp with no wargear bonus, and half normal attacks for cavalry and rounding down from an 8th in a full infantry company, or
3. Having the whole company with Spirit Grasp (tho IMO this is very unlikely)

I've tried the rulebook and the WoTR FAQ and sadly can't quite find what I'm looking for. Personally I'd go with option 2 as it makes more sense.

Thoughts?

We play it as #1.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Guess it's just what you agree with your opponent but I see why #1 could be used - shame though as Spirit Grasp is a brilliant rule

Eh I agree with #1 aswell.

Spirit grasp is a very nice rule, but seeing the sheer amount of Elf players around where I live with glaives, the rule is actually a annoyance and thats when you feel good about the rusty piece of orc iron you just swung.

LOL I see what you mean. Would still be great if the GW guys would make it clear. Would so chomp up my GF's Rohirrim with even more ease

Chances are though I'll use him in my unit of Morgul Knights, so would benefit from the lance, and being very mobile to help with leadership and his gravy Rule Through Fear so Spirit Grasp may not be as essential there

See the box on lower left side of page 69 of the WOTR rulebook. It states explicitly that the powers of epic heroes are not transferred to companies.

The game designer has been quoted as saying that some of the rules that cannot be transferred to the rest of the formation are there for completions sake.

Sadly, this (currently) causes more confusion than anything. Especially when people feel they are paying for such rules and not be able to use them.

Frankly, I am tempted to take a black magic marker to my rule book and blackout such offending instances.

They should not be there and if they were in fact present 'for completions sake', then this implies some use for them in the future. I find it more likely that there will be a WotR V2.0 before there is any WotR supplement produced to utilize such entries given 'for completions sake'.

I hope I am wrong.
