My friend and I are considering to start a Necron army. Any ideas on whats good to start with? Say 1k pts.

Are 3 Monoliths a good idea?

Best advice.....Don't start Necrons

Second best advice. Don't use 3 monoliths at 1000 points (if you can, probably not possible, nope it isn't, will cost min of 1165 for 3 monoliths, 2 warriors squads and a lord with no upgrades) probably not viable until 1750/2000 if that

You need to really chose between Destoyerwing, monolith wall or teleporting around the table (included in monolith list)

Don't listen to rodgers first point - this is something that should never be said to someone showing an interest in a particular army. Besides, the new codex will surely be out within the next 12 months, so starting now isnt a bad idea.

He is correct about 3 monoliths though - besides, youd never be able to field them at 1000 points. You need a legal army, which is bare minimum:

10 x Warriors
10 x Warriors
1 Necron Lord with Warscythe + resurrection orb.

Thats 510 points already. Adding a monolith (maybe 1 is not a bad idea at 1000 points), will take you to near 750.

From there you can go for immortals or destroyers. Destroyers rock, but with so few points remaining, youd get more immortals, which might be a bit better at 1000 points.

Must be true. I read it on the internet!

Necrons are great, and the internet nonsense machine that makes people underestimate them is a beautiful thing.

OT: I have a reasonably competitive Necron list in the Batrep in my sig, if you wanted to check it out.

The compulsory lord and warriors comes to 460, so that's obviously going to be a big part of it. I say throw in a Monolith, 4 Destroyers and a Veil of Darkness. I own 4 Monoliths though, because I like to use 3 at 2500 and more than that in Apocalypse!

I absolutely love the necrons - I can win with them really regularly, I don't understand why they get so much hate!

The key thing I feel about monoliths (not sure if you agree monster), is that they are support units rather than damage dealers. Sure they can pump out a large number of shots, but they can be crucial for getting that squad back to their feet - or even acting as a moving shield!

You win with Necrons? Your opponents should learn to play! Just kidding. It's another asinine thing I read all the time when people are confronted with the fact that what they read on some blog or board is a lie..

I don't know if you've read the tactica in my sig, but I am a big proponent of the Monolith Wall. It keeps the Thunderwolf Cavalry and the rest off of your warriors while the Monoliths either recycle fallen Warriors and Destroyers or lay down the law with their Particle Whip(a pretty reliable Tank Killer, really).

I don't leave home without them.

Yes i;ve read your tactica and found it extremely informative.

The particle whip is very effective for me. The one thing i've found with the necrons is that they are a challenging army to use at present. Some armies are just point and click (admitedly my black templars are like this, but they were designed for close combat so thats hardly the armies fault), but with the necrons you really have to think.

Monolith teleporting, veil of darkness, squad positioning, lord placement - things that are trivial in other armies are so crucual to necrons, it adds another layer of complexity to the game I feel.

I agree.

I would also never advise one to build a list over 1500 points that doesn't have a C'Tan in it. They sort of mitigate the Necrons' hideous assault capability.

Tell me about it. I LOVE pariahs, but there is no point in taking them anymore, they just get wrecked by anything I4 or above.

Off the top of my head, this is the 2k list I run (its not exact but i dont have my codex with me)

Lord w/Veil, Warscythe, Orb
Destroyer Lord w/Orb + Warscythe

30 warriors
10 immortals
8 destroyers
2 monoliths

I try mainly to focus on out manouvering my opponents (veil and teleportation help out a lot here. I know they get a lot of hate, but I actually like warriors. Used correctly they can be powerful.

I like the list, my only real concern is the lack of a C'Tan. At those point values you're going to be seeing a lot of Terminators and Thunderwolves and whatnot and they will absolutely run wild on you without a big beast to counter charge them.

Unless your very lucky with your C-Tan saves, or just don't play any shooty armies, i'm not sure how you can love them so much. Yeah their quite fun to use, and can do quite a lot of damage (I had the Deciver kill nearly two whole seer councils, unfortunately, it took quite a while, and the rest of the army did nothing, so still lost), but they only have 4+ save, so as soon as you start facing Guard, Space Wolves, DE with either lots of S8/9 shots or poisoned etc. And unless hiding behind a monolith or two (a huge point cost) its probably going to be quite visible.

P.s
I'm not trying to be overly negative or nasty or anything.
But i may not be the best player ever, but i have never really had that good a time with Necrons. Yes their fine with not dieing for a while, but they don't really kill that much.

I think/thought Destroyers are the best unit in the codex, but really they have quite a lot of downsides. Mobility is actually a huge downside really, You want/need to get your Destroyers into the best position, which often will mean not being near another unit. Which means a bit of fire on them, they are essentially down. But if you keep them all together, they may not get the best position, and it also give your opponent one big blob to focus on.

I'm going to read your tactica now, and see exactly how you do it, as i would quite like to be able to win a few more games with Crons....

You have a valid point! There is a way around it...

rodgers37 wrote:And unless hiding behind a monolith or two (a huge point cost) its probably going to be quite visible.

And there it is! It isn't that huge of a point cost. You should be bringing a Monolith anyway, and it hide the Nightbringer completely and he makes it impossible for Ork Boyz and Seer Councils to assault your stuff and he chokes out Space Marines like it's cool.

Necrons are an awesome army - I've been playing mine since their small debut in 2nd Ed and haven't looked back.

Are they a challenge - Yes.
Can they beat the top armies (IG, SW, BA) - I have and i'm not that great a player, so yes.
Fun army to use and paint - Yes.

I can use multiple styles of army at a lot of pts levels, but my favourites are Destroyerwing at 1000-2000 pts and Monolith Wall at 2000 onwards.

And Mark1130 speaks the truth - The Battlebox is the best way to start a Necron Force. Just add a Lord and you have a perfectly viable force with 2 boxes and a lord.

Good Luck.
