hey guys,

may have been asked often, but I read the SM Codex, and it seems you can only play a chapter if the Master of the Chapter is here.

What I mean: let's say I want to play Salamanders. If I want to have the salamanders special tactics, I have to get Vulkan as a HQ, right?

So as long as Vulkan is not in the battle, all Salamanders are only green Ultramarines?

Is there no other way to get your Chapter Tactics than getting the Chapter Master with you?

Technically if you play a Salamanders army without Vulkan then yeah basically green Ultramarines except you would be using more heat based wepaons and stuff.
Vulkan and Khorsarro Khan and Imperial Fist man aren't Chapter Masters so go figure...
There are no other ways of getting chapter tactics unless you have a unit that specifically says so.
If you want Vulkans chapter tactics you must use Vulkan.

Ok...

And Ultramarines can paint Vulkan in blue, and get the Salamanders chapter tactics, right..?

If yopu want to play an Ultramarines company but use Vulkans rules just paint him blue and name him Captain Bluey of the Ultramarines Blue company or something... It's called Counts as and is possibly the best rule in the book.

Oh, yes, i know that, no problem

It's just that it's as easier/complicated for them than for me to get my own tactics :p If it means being even more an Ultramarines colorswap, not so sure I want to start a SM army finally... maybe i'll go check the more different chapters (like DA, BA, SW..)

Pedro Cantor actually is the Chapter Master BTW. But to the point, I'd say make up your own color scheme, so you can have all the HQ's in your force, and not have to fiddle with a story to include it if you played, say, Ultramarines.

All is forgiven if repaid in Traitor's blood.

Ok, so no Salamander/Crimson Fist/Imperial Fist-like chapter without bringing the special character.. *snif*

Anyway, it's just a future project (already have a lot to do, but we all want to do some Marines right?), so I still have time to think about it

Thanks for the explanation!

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

and for the record, all the Smurf characters don't have a special chapter tactics so you can actually combine them with Characters with chapter tactics and they will benifit.

Pedro will make Tigerius, Calgar, and Cato all stubborn.

Vulkan will TL Cassius's combi-flamer.

Shrike will give them all Fleet(epic Calgar, Shrike, Hammernator Fleeting infiltrating unit combo FTW)

and so on...

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Shame you can't mix and match though. Imagine scoring sternguard with TL-combis or outflanking Fleeting hammernators .

Pedro's Chapter Tactics is Stubborn, his Sternguard bonus is a separate ability, so that does work.

Also, Shrike HIMSELF can make outflanking fleeting Hammernators because his unit has Infiltrate. If you want to add Khan into the mix then you have outflanking, fleeting, furious charging, hit-and-running Hammernators.
