My buddy and I never say what army we're going to bring as we like to keep things surprising. This has led to 2 Guard vs Guard games. Welp. Here's one of them:

His list:
Company command with power weapon, plasma guns, medic, Master of the Fleet in a Chimera
10 vets with 3x melta, autocannon in a chimera
10 vets with 3x plasma, autocannon in a chimera
10 vets with 3x GL, autocannon in a chimera
10 vets with 2x flamer 1 heavy flamer, autocannon in a chimera
Primaris psyker riding with the GL dudes
2 basilisks in a battery
2 squadded Leman Russes with bolters
2 squadded Leman Russes with plasma cannons

My list:
Company command with lascannon, plasma gun, plasma pistol, vox, MoO
++Steel Legion platoon:
Platoon command with 3x plasma, medic, power sword (Captain Sturm)
2x 10 men with heavy bolter, GL
++Cadian platoon:
Platoon command with 3x GL, vox, power weapon
2x 10 men with lascannon, GL
++Catachan platoon
Platoon command with 3x flamer, vox, power weapon
10 men with plasma gun, vox
10 men with flamer, vox
Autocannon squad
Harker's vets with 3x plasma gun, vox
Vets with 3x melta gun, vox, chimera
Hellhound
2 squadded Leman Russes with bolters, one stubber
2 squadded Leman Russes (Demolisher with bolters, regular with bolters and lascannon)
DUKE NUKEM

We roll table quarters and one objective in each deployment zone. We put them in our respective deployment zones and set up.

I hole up my autocannon squads and one lascannon squad in a ruin in my backfield. My central building has my company command up top, and two Steel Legion squads on the ground around it. The Steel Legion command is on the ground next to the building. Behind the Steel Legion are my two bolter Russes. In front of the building are my other two. The Catachan platoon leads in front of the second set of tanks, and the Cadian command and lascannon team set up in a building on the halfway line, close to the right edge. I'm packed in tight, so my meltavets and hellhound join Harker and Duke in reserve.

He sets up his Basilisks behind a ruin as close to the corner as can be, and has four of his chimeras down. Three are in a column, and one is in the back. He seizes initiative and goes first.

TURN 1
The three Chimeras roll up. They come along the close side of the forest in the middle of the field, closer to my table edge. The all move 12 and the lead tank pops smoke. The rear field Chimera moves up but not terribly far. The Basilisks fire a volley that lands dead on my Steel Legion command squad, putting Sturm and his men out of action.

My men reposition, but very little. There is not quite enough cover to hide from the artillery. The Catachan platoon has its flamer squad go towards the Chimeras and the plasma squad rolls poorly and doesn't follow very closely. Command sticks behind the infantry squad. I forget to move Cadian command. My bolter Russes back up, seeing that one of the Chimeras have meltavets in them. Company command fires on one of the Chimeras, exploding it. The Master of Ordnance calls down a shell that stuns one of the tanks. With the squad of grenade launcher veterans and their Primaris Psyker blown out of their tank, it was time to fire. The Steel Legion, enraged at the loss of their commander, pour fire into these rebel Guardsmen. With the aid of the Catachans, they kill them, Psyker and all. The lone veteran with a grenade launcher flees the scene. Autocannons boom at long range and wreck the Chimera full of plasma gun veterans that is sitting near his objective. My other lascannons and battlecannons bark but the Chimeras are only lightly damaged, stunned, and shaken.

TURN 2
None of his reserves come in. The Chimera full of tank hunting melta vets rolls up and disgorges its dangerous cargo, just within range of my bolter Russes. The command Chimera comes up shortly behind them, and issues them to Bring it Down! on my tanks. One tank wrecks, and one explodes. The explosion kills four Steel Legion Guardsmen. The Plasma gunners far back on his objective shoot their autocannon and kill a Guardsman somewhere. The Basilisks thunder again, and come down on my Cadian command squad. The Lieutenant drops to the ground while his four buddies get pulped. He's pinned, but doesn't run.

None of my reserves come in - even if he didn't have a Master of the Fleet they wouldn't. I'm rolling low today. I work together a counter attack at the melta vets, using a Catachan squad to flame and charge them. My Steel Legion turn to face the light armor in the area, and my Catachan command starts toward the forest. My Catachan plasma squad sets up in a building to prepare for the reserved veterans. The Steel Legion shoot the Chimeras, bouncing bullets and grenades off the sides. The Master of Ordnance drops a pie plate, and the command squad unloads into the Chimeras, but no damage is done. The Leman Russ Demolisher shoots its shell at the lead Chimera, and while the shell only glances, the explosion hits the command Chimera behind it on the side armor, wrecking it! Much of the rest of my fire is deterred by smokescreens and buildings. My Catachans charge into assault with the vets, losing a man and causing no wounds. They fail morale and run off table.

TURN 3
His flamer veterans come in on my half of his table edge, as does the squad of plasma cannon Russes. The Chimera rolls up and pops smoke behind some trees. His command squad hobbles through the wreckage of their Chimera into a building in my table edge, and order their victorious melta gunners to shoot my remaining Russes. The melta guns blow the cannon off the lascannon russ, and stun the Demolisher. Their Chimera is pulled up right next to them. The Basilisks shoot at my lascannon squad and autocannon teams in my backfield, killing two teams of gunners, and two guardsmen. Both squads are pinned. The plasma cannon Russes announce their arrival by shooting my company command squad, blasting everyone out of the tower except the lascannon crew and the vox caster. They go to ground, and their morale holds.

Things looked grim, but hope arrived in the form of a Hellhound and a Chimera, loaded for bear with tank hunting veterans. The Hellhound came up right behind the traitorous company command squad and incinerated the lot of them. The melta vets fire out of their chimera at the rear armor of the traitor Chimera in my midst, exploding it and killing some of the veteran heretics. Catachan command moves up and torches them (albeit very poorly) leaving three alive. My two Russes back up, as they can't shoot this turn anyway. What little anti tank fire I have dedicates itself to failing to penetrate the inbound Chimera full of flamer veterans. My turn ends with Catachan command charging the melta vets and killing them.

TURN 4
The second squad of Leman Russes come in. They come in behind the Chimera, which drives up and unloads its cargo of flamer toting veterans, right in the face of one of my Cadian squads. The Basilisks blast Catachan command, killing the Lieutenant's buddies but leaving him alive. Sensing his fortune, he runs away. The newly arrived tanks blow up my turret-less Leman Russ, leaving the Demolisher unscathed. The other Leman Russes blast my veteran Chimera, stunning and shaking it vigorously. It must be like the inside of a dryer in there. The flamer veterans burn the building with my Cadians in it to the ground, killing them all.

Duke Nukem arrives: "It's time to kick ass and contest objectives. And I'm all out of ass." He arrives right on the enemy objective, and Harker's vets are not far behind, the big guns of the traitors in his sights. My vets sit pretty in their shaken tank while my Demolisher rolls up and tries to take out some armor. Its shell bounces off harmlessly. Duke throws his pipe bomb and laughs as he kills three Guardsmen who go to ground. Hehe, what a mess. Harker and his boys silence the artillery, blowing both guns into oblivion. One veteran is killed by the explosion, and one of my plasma gunners overheats and dies. My Cadian platoon commander, no longer pinned, leads a charge against the flamer veterans alongside a Catachan infantry squad. He is killed in the combat, but not before he lays down the law with his power sword and kills a traitor. The Catachans kill one more. Heretic morale holds. Meanwhile, my Hellhound drives far towards the enemy objective.

TURN 5
The Leman Russes pour all their fire into my men on my objective. The Cadian squad is cut short as the single remaining hostile Chimera bears down on them. The lascannon team, sergeant, grenade launcher and vox caster somehow all survive the fusillade of fire. The Catachan gun team loses its spotter, but the gunner himself is still holding tight. The Steel Legion squad near the objective takes a beating too, but six men remain and they're not running anywhere.

My hellhound rolls up and torches six of the enemy veterans. Duke plugs one with his super guns, and Harker guns down two more. Even when they go to ground, they can't dodge the hail of bullets and the whole squad is wiped out. My few remaining Cadians from the infantry and command squads shoot and disable the last hostile Chimera, leaving it immobilized and missing all its guns. My demolisher plunks a shell harmlessly off the Leman Russes, and my melta vets gun their Chimera onto my objective.

The tank crews of the traitor Leman Russes realize there's no way they'll be able to blast enough of my men off their objectives before time is up, so they roll off into the sunset to be traitorous another day...

That was a fun game; I definitely thought I was done for in turn 3, and until Duke and Harker's boys showed up on turn 4, I wasn't sure I could pull it off. Destroying those Basilisks gave me a lot of peace of mind, as I wasn't getting blasted every turn anymore. Those guns took out some really important units and did a lot of damage. Looking forward to painting mine and using them to do some similar damage. This is the second time I've beaten this mechvet list, although this time I was a little more generalized - last time I was geared to fight Marines, and arguably did even better. Those meltagun veterans were nasty though, and killed a squad of my infantry, two Leman Russes, and knocked the gun off one of my other Russes. I think his list needs something more to keep things grounded. Apparently he's going to bin the Basilisks soon, as their models are secondhand and beat to hell anyway. If I were him I'd keep them and buy up an infantry platoon to keep them protected. That's what I'll be doing if I'm able to get some Valhallans...

Glad you guys enjoyed it! It felt good to use a pretty average list with a wacky unit like Stormtroopers to fight off such a tough army.
