Hey Everyone-
My buddies and I have been looking at Malifaux for a while and have decided to go to our FLGS tonight and take the plunge. I am going to be buying the Dreamer and his gang and wanted some input on good investments, strategy, and a nice starter gang. Money isn't an issue really.
So far, I am definitely buying the Dreamer/Lord Chompy Bits (duh.) and I would like to get Teddy (that model is what sold me on the Dreamer). What other models would I need to round out the gang for small games my buddies and I can do to learn?
Any input is appreciated and thanks!

I'd suggest that you get a base gang of the factions from the book, and then add the dreamers in as a back up.
Getting into this game right now is good, but you can see that they are going to have to be revamping rules pretty soon. These new factions are starting to have the Warmachine issue with them, as in they trump older models, and some of the new ones have a ??? factor to them.
Main thing about the game is that it doesn't play like other games, and you put together a card deck to fight your opponents. That in itself to me was the lead sticking point. The armies are specific. You get one, it doesn't play like another, so after you learn the rules and how to play, you have to larn your army, and HOW you want to play.
I play a girl named Pandora, and she has a bunch of other freaks in her crew. One is a baby with a giant knife named Kade, and the other is a freak named Candy, who is a little git and good as a followup attack. The other look like a bunch of ghosts, called sorrows. I use them to mob up and hold another opponent down, while teddy and the Kade guy are dealing with the other one.
The game plays nicely by any step, and the dreamers seem to have a nice glass cannon effect, they hit hard, but don't seem to take alot of punishment. Maybe it's the way I look at them, but they seem a little ...off. Teddy is a one shot guy. He is a nice add on for added punch. I use one with Cage, based on that it is his handler, kinda relation. I run up with teaddy to take a beating, then run cage around to followup on the end of the teddy attack. Its a hammer anvel thing, but its pretty cool.
The game plays well by you being to be able to play with any boxed set, but some play easier then others. A straight up shooty shoot army, a hand to hand army, a spell army, and a mob army are pretty much your choices.
On the whole, Neverborn are tricky, and the different Neverborn crews have different styles of play.
What they do have in common is that you use the weaker units to tie up opponets, then finish them off by whittling them down with your leaders following up the attacks and making the killshots. Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth.
I picked up another crew of resurrectionists, Nicodem, as a matter of fact. These guys are outright zombies, and they play like mobbing up, while your leader spawns more. After I found that out, I was a little skeptical, but I've not really been working on them as much, so they are on hold right now.
Like I said, haven't played too many games, but that was my impression with what I've been doing with them.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

Thanks for the info! I mostly like the Dreamer because of his idea. It was explained to me that it is this kid with some kind of latent energy that can manifest his nightmares. That fluff is just neato to me!
So you say he is a hit and run type guy? Hit hard in an area, regroup, hit hard where needed again?

Hit hard and hope his opponent is either dead or fleeing by the end of the activation. I'm not too well versed with the rules, but it seems that if your wanting to use him effectively he should be backed up a little. Teddy is a given all Dreamer players should have, even if you might not always use it, a few day dreams to go with the Dreamer are a nice addition, or maybe a pairing of Lelu and Lilithu to provide a bit of decent and versatile punch (great flankers)? Uh, my own crew selection and feeling out characters isn't exact, but you could always check out the Wyrd forums (the Neverborn section under Malifaux Matters) to get a few tips about this kind of thing. Heh, and if you can get a hold of the Gencon Lord Chompy Bits and Dreamer model, its friggin huge.^^
So yeah for 35ss

The Dreamer definitely has cool fluff. His story is part of what attracted me to the game.
After getting his box set, you'll need to get a blister of Day Dreams. It's three in a pack and that's all you'll ever need. They are the Dreamer's totem, help protect him somewhat, and blow up to unleash your beatsticks.
People really like to spam Alps with the Dreamer, though a lot of people view it as a cheesy tactic. Teddy is really good in his crew also. Basically though, as long as you are taking nightmares, you can't build a bad crew.
Just recognize that the Dreamer is somewhat of a one trick pony, he's all about the big Alpha Strike... fly up and unleash the nightmares and start beating face. Not saying he's bad or anything, just very agro.

Very interesting stuff! Not sure how I feel about the move in, explode things, then be impotent.
The other models that I really liked were Nicodem & Pandora. What's the lowdown on them?

Nico is the quintessential necromancer. He turns corpses into Mindless Dead, buffs the undead, and has a couple decent spells. Mostly a back line support caster. A very solid master that a new player could pick up and get good with very quickly. The only downside to him is the high model count and cost that goes along.
Pandora is the best master in the game. I think a lot of people are hoping she will undergo errata, but Wyrd has made no mention of her being changed at this point. The key to her game is 12" range and Will Power duels. If you lose a WP duel in her range, you take a wound. If she wins a WP duel, she gets a free 4" move. She has a couple of abilities called Incite and Pacify that create a WP duel, she can pick one of these a turn and each time it's successful she can use it again until she ails or runs out of models to target. Also, you have to take a WP duel to target her for any reason, and if you fail it generally means the action is wasted, you take a wound, and she moves four more inches. Add all these together and it's easy to see how she is powerful.
Don't get me wrong, there are ways to take her down, and she has one or two tough match ups (Perdita mostly), but she's very easy to exploit.

I ended up going with the dreamer, I figure Malifaux is cheap (compared to building a 40k army) so if I don't like him I can easily grab another guy.
Looking at the models, they are awesome! I was amazed at how little flash they had on them for the entire range being metal!
I ended up getting the "Bad Dreams Box" and a box of daydreams.
My buddies and I postponed our first game to today so we could base and get our models together. What would you suggest as a starting army, knowing what I have.
My friends got the Ramos Box and the Lady Justice Box.

That's a solid purchase. You can easily fit all of those models in most games, as they total up to 25 points. You may want to get another model for your crew before you do 35 point scraps, but at 25 you'll have a soulstone cache of 5, because of the Dreamer's Master of Dreams ability, and 30 you'll have the max 7.
If your friends didn't get any models besides the box sets, 25 points is probably the fairest match up.
