Subject: Ogres; how break face are they?

So, after looking at some Ogres for a friend of mine to play in 40K as an Ogryn (count as NidZilla) army, I was just wondering how cheap they are, moneys wise, and how good they are of an army.
I may just have him play Fantasy with me while I play 40K with my other friends.

Ogres are actually fairly weak in 8th edition fantasy. You can make them work, but it is a very difficult army to play. Really need a new book (like the current grey knight codex).
As for price, check out the usual sources for discount minis. Not sure what a full army would run, though.

Well if you're up for converting it makes it significantly cheaper since our lords and hero choices are so expensive. A Battalion should give you a solid 1k force if you build it as such:
Convert 1 Tyrant -250 pts equipped
Convert 1 Butcher or Bruiser BSB - @155 pts equipped
Can make 5 Ironguts including bellower and standard, maybe 6 but may want to use some bitz for the conversions above, also give them a magic banner - @ 290pts
5 Bulls usually keep this naked or with iron fist whatever you prefer, may as well model with iron fist, champion units for ogres are kind of a lot of pts for 1 extra attack, so not really worth it - @ 205pts
24 Gnoblar Fighters with Champion - @ 50pts
2 Leadbelchers full command - @ 130pts
About 1080 pts total, not bad you can tweak the numbers and eqiup for 1k, get a 2nd battalion at some point make basically above again minus 1 lord/hero and +1 Iron Gut or Bull, you'll know after a few games which one you like more, maybe convert some gnoblars fighters to trappers by green stuffing on some fur cloaks. Leadies are awesome model but 2 per battalion is a good number. Try to add in some scraplaunchers, they are pretty good but remember you have to have 1 unit of gnoblars to take one scrappie and 1 unit of bulls per to take 1 unit of gnoblars. Gorgers are nice too try and pick up a pair for dealing with enemy war machines.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Ogres are much better than Ogryns, that's for sure.
They don't have nearly as many options as some of the other races, but they are probably the cheapest army to start by far. And they're pretty funny, IMHO.

Hargus is right on, battalions are a very cheap and effective way to make an ogre army. My search-fu failed and I couldn't find the threads, but we've discussed this a lot here! Ogre battalion boxes are one of the best deals GW has going, and buying 2 or even 3 is a great way to make a very solid Ogre army. All you have to do is convert up some ogres as characters, and add a few supporting units if desired.

The only downside of them is the current scraplauncher model. It is the most difficult GW model to assemble available. You will cry when you see this thing. I opened mine and closed it back up and I've set my ogres aside until I have time to figure it out. It's not necessary but it is a very fun and effective tool. I recommend trying to make your own, my thought was to use the rhinox rider from forgeworld and give him a lead belcher cannon, add some gnoblars running around and you have a slightly more expensive model that is ready in a fraction of the time.

That's a great idea, Hargus. I ordered just the metal rhinox portion from the scraplauncher off an ebay seller for a conversion... unfortunately still waiting for it to come a month after buying (coming from Canada and there was a delay in shipping) but at least that part is only a few pieces

The scraplauncher really needs to be pinned. And to pin it properly, you have to use about 20 odd pins. But once you've done it, it's not so bad. I carry mine around in a box like this:
And it hasn't broken yet.

lalabox-
I'm going to have to give you an internet citation for miniatures-abuse... and to painted models, at that!
Oh, the horror!
That said, I'm glad your scraplauncher hasn't broken... I just can't believe someone dedicated to put in 20 pins to a single model, would toss the model in a box on top of painted models! Is your varnish that good?

Ok, so see if I can get one of the Ogres boxes and try to convert some heroes, got it.
And if all else fails, I have either Another army to go to when we decide to play Fantasy again, or just a whole lotta Ogres for my Chaos army.

This is what I did, saw the conversion somewhere and thieved it Be warned that the belcher cannon arms (at least the one I used, the long empire cannon) don't fit very well on the FW rider's torso, must have been some skewing of the mold or something, the FW ogre (though identical to the plastic upper body) is a little too wide or small of strangely angled or something. - Salvage

lalabox that picture made me cry a bit. Whats with the bearer in the lower left with the beast skull that is facing way off to the left? It's like- Look at how menacing we are and look at this beast we killed and it's side profile!

you clearly haven't faced a decently/competant Ogre player or faced them at all.
Ogres are much much better then they were in 7th and are clearly Middle Tier now. above Bretts, Beastmen, and WEs.
with Monsterous Infantry having supporting attacks the number of attacks is doubled(tripled in Horde)
stomp and step up also alleviated the problem of low inititive.
the FAQ made Gutmagic stackable with multiple castors and turns, allowing Ogres to get up to potentially Str and T10 with Regen.
Ogre Bulls are a bargain for what you get statwise.
Characters are some of the most durable in the game.
Scraplauncher is the 2nd best warmachine in the game(behind the Trebuchet) with a Str3, Killing Blow, large template. and it's technically a Chariot to boot.

Scraplauncher with a cannon would look awesome. Put some helmets on those gnoblars!

the Hellcannon is more expensive.
is harder to control.
can't move and fire.
doesn't have Killing Blow.
doesn't have to take monster reaction tests when it's crew go away(pretty likely)
has a very good chance of not shooting again if the crew get eaten(Ld4 doesn't pass very often)
Scraplaunchers only take Ld tests if their are enemies avaliable to charge and this can be remedied with a 40 point investment in gnoblars(who are required to take the Scraplauncher anyway)

It's a butcher conversion, the whole model is facing to the left. I made a thread with all my stuff. And that is an old photo, but I still use the same box, although it has kinda disintegrated after 6 years. And I guess that I'm just really lucky that none of my stuff chips all that much. I mean, I take care when putting them in, rather than just chucking them in, but I will eventually invest in another figure case.
Edit: Grey Templar wrote:Scraplaunchers only take Ld tests if their are enemies avaliable to charge and this can be remedied with a 40 point investment in gnoblars(who are required to take the Scraplauncher anyway)
Is this tactic just to buy a unit to stand around in front of the launcher?

yes, the tactic is to have the gnoblars just stand in front of the scraplauncher.
