Hey everyone! Been a few quiet weeks here on the boards. I've mostly been lurking and not updating my P&M Blog or doing anything more than looking at so many shiny pictures that I see on this site. Well I got my buddy into
40k shortly after I signed up for an account here, and instantly he was drawn towards the Necrons. Well like any Necron general we felt we needed at least one Monolith
. Since we knew that we would most likely only get a chance to do this once we wanted to see the effects of the Gauss rods under black light... Much to our surprise.. They glow! (who knew!). So thus began madness...
This picture is a shot of one of the walls before we started to cut. We placed all of these in just to see how it would look with black light glowing from behind. We saw that only the ends were glowing and didn't like that effect. So we proceeded to move on to the next shot:

but we did manage to clean all of this up before we moved on.
Well the monolith lends itself well to this kind of conversion, so we next took a dremel tool and drilled some small holes (just large enough to fit some wires through) and we wound up with this:
We used the main support structure as our wire holder to keep everything as neat as we could. Neither of us are professional electricians, but we've dabbled (okay I just watched for this part
). After drilling all of the holes we needed, we began to see how we wanted to place the little black lights. Which leads us to:
As you can see we were going for as much direct lighting as possible. The gun turrets have little holes drilled in them to allow each gun to glow on the monolith. Then we set about to make sure we could actually power the whole setup:
Eventually we managed to get everything soldered and working properly, now came time to actually build the durned thing.
If you look very closely, you can see the bulbs sitting in the support structure and poking out of various places. We needed these to feed off to other areas to light up. We built up the side walls first so we could actually set the support structure in place without it falling over (it liked to do that).
About a week ago, we got it built, painted and put the finishing touches on it last night. Neither of us have a steady hand, and we just didn't like the decals so my friend drew his own on there with an Elmer's Gold Paint Pen.
And thus! we end it with a little light show!
