I received Space Hulk this week in a trade and the models are beautiful! It has made me want to create a small Blood Angels force to go with them, and base them so that they can be used in
40k or Space Hulk.
Looking through some project logs, basing the figures on 40mm bases makes them unwieldy in the Space Hulk game - and they need to be based to play
40K properly.
As such, I decided to magnetise the bases.
Things required:
Space hulk figures
40mm bases
Drill (electric or hand)
Drill bits to suit the small magnet size
Small magnets to go in the figure
Larger magnets to go under the base
Scenic stuff to pretty up the base (I used diamond plate decking, some fly wire and other bits and pieces)
Glue
Here are the steps that I took:
1. Drill holes of an appropriate size (I was using ball bearing magnets in the feet so used a 3.2mm drill)
2. Get the magnet ready to go in the feet. Put some cello tape over the top so that superglue does not stick to the magnets. This will ensure you have the magnet polarity lined up correctly when inserted.
3. Put a small amount of superglue into the hole and insert the magnets firmly into the feet, pushing on your magnet stack. Watch for glue overflow and ensure you don't stick it all together. Slide the magnet stack holding the small magnet to the side and then lift off, ensuring you don't pull the magnet back out of the feet.
4. Place the figure on the 40mm base and place magnets on the bottom - it should now be held in place. Make sure looking underneath that the magnets are not being stuck by the pegs on the base.
5. Move the figure to where you want it on the base - the magnets underneath will move with the figure.
6. Hold the figure in place, remove one of the magnets, place superglue where it was and then drop the magnet back down to that spot - it will self right its polarity and pull down. Press it into the superglue and then repeat for the other one.
7. You can trace out some pieces so there is a neat slot and some theming on the base.
8. I used some fly-wire as well to add some texture.
9. When finished the figure will sit comfortably in the slot created.
10. The finished base (over exposed here so that you can't see the texture, pipes etc).
