So, situation:

We're playing a 3v3 game, and I'm playing blood angels. Lemartes and his Death Company make it into assault with two enemy Rhinos. Now, getting the charge, the unit gets Furious Charge. When the Furious Fister gets his chance to attack, I'm told by the group that I only get to strike at S8, and do not get the +1S bonus from furious charge.

According to their explaination, I can only pick one strength modifier when I assault. Or something like that. Anyway, they cite this part of the FAQ as evidence:

Warhammer 40k Rulebook Official Update version 1.2 wrote:
Q: Does the Furious Charge special rule give +1 Strength
to attacks made with a close combat weapon that strikes
at a specific strength value? For example are hits from
Gabriel Sethʼs Blood Reaver resolved at Strength 8 or 9
when he has Furious Charge? (p75)

A: No. Hits from Gabriel Sethʼs Blood Reaver would still be
resolved at Strength 8.

Saying that the strength modifier from a powerfist (or any weapon that increases strength, such as a Big Choppa or the current Nemesis Force Weapons) does not gain the strength bonus from Furious Charge because they are a specific strength value (that specific strength value, in this case, being double the strength of the weilder).

Now, I (and everyone I've ever played with up until now) was always under the impression (in every single game I've ever played with Orkz and Blood Angels up until now) that the bonus from Furious Charge applies after all multipliers, since the bonus from a powerfist or other weapon that modifies strength was not a specific value.

Now, in this game it was largely irrelevant, since the unit popped the Rhinos anyway and died quickly after, but if their (the club I'm playing with) interpretation is correct, I'm sure you can see the obvious implications this could have had in every single game I've played prior to this. They've cited some Calgary tournaments as supporting their interpretation, but every single time I've ever played in Calgary, they've used the interpretation I've used.

Your input?

No, they are wrong. The reason that it doesn't work with Seth's weapon is that it hits at a specific Strength value. "His close combat attacks are resolved at Strength 8" or something of that nature. Even if he gets a +20 bonus to his Str, it won't affect his attacks made with the sword, because they are always made at Str. 8, same goes with abilities that would reduce his Str.

There's an example in the rulebook (I think it's near the front) of a weapon doubling the strength of the user, and adding +1 str, and the order in which it is resolved (multiply and then add) I'll look it up in the morning if noone has beat me to it by then.

Thanks for reminding me. I'm sure I saw such an example, but I always forgot where it actually was. For reference.

Multiple Modifiers:
If a model has a combination of rules or wargear that both add to and multiply one of its characteristics, first multiply the basic value and then add the extra points. For example, if a model with Strength 4 has both '+1 Strength' and 'double Strength,' its final Strength will be 9 (4*2=8, 8+1=9).

Astorath's axe is another example of a weapon that does gain +1S from furious charge.

Any Ork player can tell you that Nobs with PKs hit at strength 9 when they launch an assault.

That FAQ question is for weapons that have a specific strength value - e.g. roughrider lances.

Powerfists do not have a specific strength value.

I know, I'm an Ork player as well, so I was quite amazed to see them even suggest this--let alone it being the general consensus in the area.

And that was my argument too. But they kept saying that a 2* multiplier was a specific value. No matter though, I found the multiple multiplier reference in the rulebook, it should all be cleared up now.
